Jimmy Fallon had a funny story on "The Tonight Show" last night about meeting up with Prince one night. Apparently, a night or two after Jimmy and his wife had a baby, Prince was texting about wanting to meet up with Jimmy for a game of ping pong at some ping pong club in NYC run by Susan Sarandon.

Jimmy is like "he knows I just had a baby...right?". Anyway, I guess Jimmy was having dinner one of those nights and Prince texted him "I'm going to be at the club at 11:30...come by for a game!". So, Fallon apparently raced over to meet up with Prince. He entered the club never having been there before and a person at the door was like "You here to play Prince? He's upstairs behind the curtain.". Jimmy goes up there and goes behind the curtain...Prince is standing there in a purple suit in high heels with paddle in his hand in a pose going "You ready?". So, Jimmy played him and Prince would be all arrogant whenever he scored but didn't say much else except keeping score aloud. They didn't have any conversation. So, Jimmy said Prince beat him like 20-10 and, on the last point, Prince smoked it off the corner of the table for the game winner. Jimmy went to retrieve the ball that went by him and, when he turned around, Prince was gone without a word...like he just vanished in thin air. Jimmy looked around a little looking behind the curtain and other places thinking it was a joke...but Prince really took off without one word. I guess the Roots drummer was showing up a little late to the club and caught Prince's limo leaving the scene. Prince rolled down the window and said something like "I smoked your boy", rolled up the window, and left.

I dunno...that was the gist of the story. Prince was one funny dude apparently...quirks and all.

Has the Lifetime Channel started casting the movie yet?

Also, I can't wait for the show "Autopsy: The Last Hours Of..." to have their one on Prince on REELZ channel. I've watched the ones on Brittany Murphy and Liberace. They were pretty good. They examine the findings and lay it all out there usually in the last ten minutes as far as what definitely did these folks in and examine whether the coroner findings were correct or faulty by whatever they find and examine.

Collins is a better songwriter (more hits) and a better singer. Prince was the better instrumentalist and performer.

I like Collins. I wouldn't consider him a better vocalist. Maybe a better songwriter. And the number of hits is just a fact.

That you think otherwise is cool.

I never put much thought into how people outside my circle thought of Prince. Interesting to see what people think in the wake of his death.

What constitutes a hit? Phil Collins had 25 Billboard Top 100 hits. 14 of those were top 20, 12 top 10 and 6 number 1s.

    Prince had 48 in the top 100, 23 top 20, 19 top 10 and 5 number 1s.

Genesis (didn't pay attention to if it was pre-Collins or not, but I suspect it is mostly with Collins), had 22 top 100, 10 top 20, 7 top 10 and 1 number 1.

So all in all, Prince and Collins were remarkably equal in number of hits.

It depends on what you mean by better songwriter. Prince's songs were more original, had more complicated rhythms, and structures. So I wouldn't say he was a better songwriter.

I would argue that Collins wasn't even a better tunesmith, but certainly that is debatable.

Okay, Phil is a big hero of mine for obvious reasons, but....come on. Prince was literally a musical genius and a modern day Mozart. No hyperbole.

I think the only modern day musician you can compare him to is Zappa. No one else really comes close, frankly.

Not sure I agree there. Those are some pretty specific areas where Phil was great. Price was cool, Phil isn't. No need to make it any more complicated. Genesis is basically a running gag.

Crack kills. Genesis became a joke when Peter Gabriel left.

How in the world did this thread become a debate over Phil freaking Collins vs. Prince?

Actually, even though I don't really like Collins music, I won't deny his ability, and I have a ton of respect for him, his drumming, singing, and songwriting even if it isn't something I'm really into.

I do like some of his Genesis work and a few of his solo songs.

The one thing about Phil Collins that nobody can deny is how cool he was with his interest and devotion to the Texas History/The Alamo, etc.

I think I Wish It Would Rain Down is better than purple rain. Those songs sound pretty similar.
