Wasn't this guy's mission to get the the US OUT of Iraq?

[rQUOTEr]U.S. to send more troops to Iraq to tackle Islamic State

The United States will send more troops to Iraq and will put them closer to the front lines of battle there to advise Iraqi forces in the war against Islamic State militants.

U.S. defense officials said on Monday that Washington will deploy about 200 additional troops, mostly as advisers for Iraqi troops as they advance towards Mosul, the largest Iraqi city still under Islamic State control.[/rQUOTEr]

Seems the harsh reality is that the troop withdraw caused a few problems in the region. Not to mention the Syrian civil war has cripled Assad's ability to abate ISIS (if he so ever chose to do so such a thing).

Right now it looks like Obama, while holding firm on the door handle, is pushing his foot further into the door way so that the next president can open it up further. It is obvious that ISIS is NOT the JV team. Think about what will happen in Mosul given what has happened and is happening in Ramadi.

    [rQUOTEr]
Islamic State mines kill dozens of civilians returning to Ramadi

Explosives planted by Islamic State have killed dozens of Iraqi civilians who returned to Ramadi despite warnings that much of the western city remains unsafe nearly four months after its recapture from the militants.

Tens of thousands of displaced residents have returned to the Anbar provincial capital in the past two months, mostly from camps east of the city where they took refuge prior to the army's advance late last year.[/rQUOTEr]

We always knew we'd be back after we left prematurely. It shouldn't be a shock.

No, his mission is not to make decisions for the security of the planet.

And it's not only to make decisions for the security of the US. It's also about the prosperity and liberty of the US.

Keeping the US out of Syria by sending troops to Syria. Bold move.

Obama sends more Special Forces to Syria in fight against IS

President Barack Obama announced on Monday the biggest expansion of U.S. ground troops in Syria since its civil war began, but the move was unlikely to mollify Arab allies angry over Washington's cautious approach to the conflict.

The deployment of up to 250 Special Forces soldiers increases U.S. forces in Syria roughly sixfold and is aimed at helping militia fighters who have clawed back territory from Islamic State militants in a string of victories.[/rQUOTEr]

This is how Afghanistan should have been handled in way back in 2001. I think he is doing the right thing. And yes, he is keeping us out of Syria and Iraq.

The fact that he isn't even contemplating deploying entire Army and Marine infantry battalions (the heart and sole of invasion forces) like Bush did for Iraq and Afghanistan is enough to be considered "keeping the US out of xxx".

Sending 150 special forces troops as training force isn't really anywhere close to the level of commitment that we saw in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Come back to me when he starts sending in Marine victor units(800-1000 size infantry battalions) before considering him a hypocrite.

SF has been in Afghanistan for 15 years now. They gain support of the locals but then cannot defend them from assholes and lose support. You give weapons and training just to have the fighters switch sides. I don't see why you think this will work in Iraq.

Yes, because sending 5-6 Marine victor units at any given time in Afghanistan certainly helped.

I think you are missing my point. We should have never nation builded in the first place. We should have just sent 100-200 JSOC troops who's sole purpose was to hunt Bin Laden. That's it. Saved plenty of money in the process and have pretty much the same backward lawless Afghanistan we see today.

Hunt Bin Laden and cut ties and place sanctions on Saudi. That would have been the proper course for justice for those who were murdered on 9/11.

To me, 'being involved' would be nation building and deplyoment of full infantry battalions.

Sending 100-200 JSOC operators isn't 'being committed'. You know how many random ass countries have some level of involvement with our special forces operators?

This is how Vietnam became a war for the US: a few advisers here, a few more there, and next thing you know 500,000+ civilian deaths, 50,000+ American deaths, 300,000+ other American causalities.

Iraq may not have the military strength to take on ISIS. This is becoming a grim reality, and Americans may have to decide if they want to send 30,000+ troops to Iraq. At this point, Obama is keeping the door open for this to happen with the next administration (how nice of him).

Iraq's arab neighbors (worthless) and Turkey aren't going to commit troops without an equal commitment form the US. Iran won't do anything more without a reduction in both sanctions and war-hawk rhetoric from the US. So, fat chance that ISIS can be dislodged from Mosul this year. Heck, Iraqi security forces cannot even surround Mosul by Ramadan (June).

Glad the commander-in-chief isn't victim to concerns about the optics of sending special ops back in. Call him a flip-flopper or a hypocrite, say he was wrong to ever withdraw, say he's on a slippery slope to fall back in. I hope and expect that he's making decisions with the best interests in the country in mind and not worrying about what people will say about him. Which is just about all this thread is about.

Your point is to build a time machine? I really don't get your point because now you are advocating to NOT send troops. OBL is gone, why do you think Obama is doing the correct thing now?

On the flip side it could easily be argued he is "doing something" to deflect the mess in Iraq. Slightly bend a curve and get people killed is a bad policy.

I don't know his motives. Maybe he's doing it for all the wrong reasons, which would be unfortunate for all concerned. In these sorts of things, I don't think I can do anything but defer to the president and hope he's faithfully doing his job.
