I wonder if Kobe Bryant will become a head coach later in life. He has the work ethic and would certainly hold players accountable. But he'd probably scare any superstar away.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Joerger has been my top candidate- i just dont see the Grizzlies letting him go? Although they were going to fire him mid season..

I dont think he gets along with the fron office- so maybe there a chance hes let go

    Well see

I think that guy's list above is flat.

Here is who I expect them to consider:

JVG: Has a close relationship with Morey, has a lot of good things to say about org
Jim Boylen: He's been frequently mentioned by people connected to the team as someone they like
Kelvin Sampson: Coached here before and Morey was high on him. Interviewed for the job previously. Harden allegedly likes him.
Lawrence Frank: Morey has been high on him for years. Not sure he can get another job honestly, but I think Morey will do due diligence on him once again.
Mike D'Antoni: Les Alexander loves this guy and Morey has praised him in the past.
Kevin Ollie: A college coach that Kevin Durant absolutely adores. Ollie has also been open to analytics and values the three point shot.
Jay Wright: A big name right now which will attract Les. Not sure he and Morey could get along.
Lionel Hollins: This seems counter-intuitive, but Morey was close to hiring Hollins as the lead defensive assistant a few years back. They apparently had a very productive meeting.

Dave Joerger is a potential option if he gets fired or leaves somehow.

I agree with you except the Lionel Hollins part.

Hollins made it very clear that he did not value input from the front office when talking to the Rockets.

He also made it very clear in various news reports too. I agree he's not coming unless Morey's going. I wouldn't want someone like him - he's old school, but someone who's not willing to at least consider analytics is close minded and would ultimately not succeed. I understand not letting analytics govern your actions is ok, but to close yourself off to information that the vast majority of coaches, including the very best ones like Pop, Spoelstra, Stevens, Carlisle, etc., accept as advantageous is just not smart.

Thanks for all your insight on the coaching search. keep it coming. I'd love joerger but I don't see Memphis firing him in time for Rockets coaching search. I'd be happy with Van Gundy, if he is more flexible on the offensive side (which he said he would be).

agreed. i think he's a good coach but needs more time on an nba bench before getting a HC spot. i feel the same about walton.

joerger and boylen would be at the top of my list, though. i just don't think les would hire such an unknown name as boylen. he usually like to go for someone who can help sell tickets as much as win games.

It is rumored that jvg will go to LA not sure how legit tho and also word has cane out from Ollie's camp that he would want SOME say in player personnel.

Kelvin Sampson is a proven commodity. NBA guys love him and he gets them to play. Defensive wizard. He's an NBA coach in waiting.

I actually think its better for the coach to have some personal say- i mean
at the end of the day he will be the one coaching them, and will probably want to have players that fit his scheme.

As i have mentioned before I would love Joerger, but if JVG comes, i would want him to have some personal say.

The Lakers #1 priority in a head coach is someone that can attract free agents and sell players on joining the Lakers.

Jeff Van Gundy, Rick Adelman and Kevin McHale all had some degree of input in personnel decisions. You need a head coach and GM with the same goals and mutual respect for each other's basketball acumen.

Van Gundy was let go because Les was frustrated and Jeff didn't communicate with the owner. Rick Adelman did not respect Daryl Morey's basketball knowledge and they had different goals.

Joerger would be a sweet get. Haven't read much from the Grizz on what they are doing except wanting to re-sign Conley. Conley is putting pressure on the Grizz to sign other FAs if he is to re-sign there. If they let go of Joerger, how is that gonna look?

Just start over man. We need a complete culture change and Morey has to go for that to happen.

New front office, new coaching staff including replacing Keith Jones. The guy has been here forever and we are one of the worst injured teams dating back to 1997ish. Keith Jones happened to start in 1996. Were never loyal to coaches, but Jones has been on the bench for 20 years?

No more retreads. I don't want someone who has failed here before and i don't want someone who has failed on another NBA team. Get a college coach or a young assistant and require that they were a former player. After all, our very own Rudy T was a young assistant who was a former player.

Off the top of my head that gives us:

    Luke Walton
    Kevin Ollie
    Sam Cassell
Mario Elie(too old IMO to start head coaching)
    Ime Udoka

Forgot to include my list of favorite non coaching experience former players that i would love to bring in with a veteran assistant coaching staff and let them learn as they go. This requires smart former players like Steve Kerr.

This is a vet team aiming to contend, it needs a proven coach, Rockets can't gamble on a Cassell/Ollie/Elie kind of guy...
