There is no opportunity cost, it is not our money - we should be paying to keep our players that fit, not letting them go, we probably could have EXTENDED him already... DD
Well he could have made a difference. Josh Smith isn't great, but he's a hell of a lot better than Terrence Jones. Playing Smith over Jones could have salvaged some of the games lost early in the season. Maybe we'd have a winnable first round opponent if that had happened.
There is an opportunity cost. If there is a better player than DMo then you get the better player. I am not talking about "money" but "talent."
Maybe, maybe not. It only takes one team to make a stupid offer. Additionally, if the prognosis for his back is too bad then we might not want to tie too much money up in him. Hopefully he gets back to full health but the fact that they were willing to trade him for a pick in the 12-14 range raises flags for me.
The way I looked at that move is Morey wanting to get a liquid asset for DMo while he had a chance knowing DMo won't be back to be able to create room for 2 Max FAs. My guess is Morey looked for moves with Jones as well but moved the PF that brought the biggest return.
Opportunity cost is not about whose money is being used, it's about how the money can be used. If we can sign Durant and another max FA like Horford, that would be money better spent than a big contract on DMo. All teams are limited by the cap and decisions need to be made. Even Mark Cuban can't spend an unlimited amount of money and has managed his cap space. Yes, even at the expense of letting some good players go.
Only takes one team and just this past offseason we saw Wes Mathews garner an enormous deal coming off major injury. There will be never before seen levels of available money to spend this offseason. To believe that Dmo will not receive a huge offer is neive. Everyone is getting a big offer. The two max scenarios do not include Dmo's cap hold, sorry.
Yeah but that's suggesting that you couldn't sign Durant and another max FA and also sign DMo, that's not necessarily the case. If you are bringing in Durant to play SF, you probably move on from Brewer and Ariza which clears up just a ton of cap space if you can find teams that want them for picks.
I think we'll still need to dump one between Pat, Ariza and D.Mo even if we trade a combination of at least 2/3 between Dekker, KJ, Harrell, Beas, Goldie to make room for two max like KD and Horford...maybe Whiteside max is less but after his last comments i'm not sure he will consider us...
Well, I guess I'll wait on Bima to come out with something after the season to say for sure, but I do think that if the Rockets get Durant that they'd move on from Ariza in order to bring in another max guy. I just don't see Ariza being happy with like 10 minutes a game and that's about all he'd get behind Durant. Also, he's a pretty easily movable piece that would bring back a good return.
Its six million dollars. Unless you are dumping other rotation pieces like Ariza and Beverley, Dmo is not included in the 2 max scenarios.
If you are bringing in Durant, why wouldn't you dump Ariza? He's easy to dump, would bring back pretty decent picks, and if he stayed he'd only get like 10 minutes a game worth of playing time. Sounds like a perfect person to trade to make more cap room.
Because he is on a bargain contract and is your dedicated wing defender. You can believe whatever you want, but all signs point to Dmo being gone.
Yeah....so a player on a "bargain contract" that is used to playing 38 minutes a game is just going to be cool with having his minutes cut down to like 10 a game because he's behind Durant? I don't see him being happy with that. I highly doubt Ariza sees himself as a bench player and that's exactly what he'd be if the Rockets got Durant. Given his "bargain contract" of nearly 8 mil a year, he'd be really, really easy to flip and would actually bring back a solid take. I know you have your heart set on dumping DMo for nothing, but wouldn't it be smarter to get something for Ariza?
Fair enough. Personally i would love to keep Trevor to run a small lineup with him at the 3 and Durant at the 4, but at the end, i think Pat is the one who is not going to be traded eventually since he'll be basically perfect (and super cheap) playing next to Harden and Durant, so yeah, i think it'll be one between Trevor and D.Mo sadly. It's also good to remember that KJ may come out from the bench playing that role, not sure he'll be ready but that's another story.
So you think Morey is going to trade rock solid, never injured Ariza, on a bargain contract and pay Dmo huge dollars with a questionable back. You clearly have not been paying attention. In regard to minutes, if we had Durant I imagine he would spend significant time at the four because small ball lineups are all the rage. Not to mention that we are likely pursuing Horford as well, which makes him even more expendable. I am not sure how many signs you need: 1.) They tried to trade him 2.) They haven't been playing him. 3.) They already signed a bargain level player at his position for next year. Wake up.
