Cubicle environment at work today... I hear someone say Harriet Tubman is replacing Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. Then I hear, "She's not an American President!!!" Then I hear, "Neither was Benjamin Franklin." Then it was quiet.

Why don't we just make new bills? The $3 bill, the $15 bill, the $200 bill? You don't have to print many of them. Add minority figures to those bills.

Vending machines hate it and the 200 dollar bill would be the new target for counterfeiting.

More likely is the $20 bill will change face many times. Makes counterfeiting harder and achieves your suggestion to get broader historical figures. I doubt it changes like the quarter, because then counterfeiting would probably be easier, as no one can keep track of which image is the correct one. But maybe once every 5 or 10 yrs or so.

Harriet might just be a trial balloon to gauge acceptance.

No reason it should be divisive at all. It seems to me like Harriet Tubman enjoys a fairly universal positive vibe. Are there people out there today of any that see her in a negative light?

More generally, though, I rather agree. I don't think people should be venerated in currency, building, or street names. The historiography turns and all of a sudden an innocuous name becomes an insult. Or, in the case of things named after living people, they do something terrible and embarrass everyone. But, if you're going to venerate someone anyway, Tubman seems like one of the safer choices one can make.

Because we don't need more denominations. I hate even having $1 bills on me. Why would I want to walk around with 3s or 15s?

I love the Euro system when it comes to change. Stores hate pennies so they round their prices and include their prices with tax. I prefer having the dollar coins.

I am with you, I wouldn't mind having dollar coins again. I cannot stand pennies dude, I throw them away at times -- they're just an annoyance. I also found out they cost more to make than they're actually worth. How ****ing stupid is that?

The only reasonable-ish argument I've seen for the usefulness of the penny is made by charities like the Salvation Army. They say it will most likely significantly cut into their spontaneous donations.
