Is there some unwritten rule in the Baseball Gods Handbook stating that the Astros absolutely, positively, can NEVER have a catcher that can hit?

In 20+ years of following the Astros, I can't remember us having a catcher that could hit. I was too young to remember Biggio as a catcher, so that doesn't count for me.

I just get so tired of having absolutely no offense from one position. Eusebio hit for decent average, but that's the only one we've really had.

Probably Mitch Meluskey in 2000 was the last offensive threat at catcher

Too bad he was terrible as a catcher and a human being.

And I'm sure it was just a coincidence that that was the year the entire pitching staff went to crap.

And they all magically right the ship the following year with Ausmus back.

    2013 Castro was good. .276/.350/.485.

I'm pretty sure Jason Castro in 2013 or Hank Conger last year was.

Tony Eusebio was a pretty good hitter, though he didn't have much power.

'98 Ausmus (.356 OBP) was solid.

    Damn that team was stacked.

Does anybody think he'll actually stay at catcher?

Castro in 13 was decent but I wouldn't consider Conger last year a threat. His BA was around 225. I forgot about Eusebio. Nice contact hitter just wish he had more power

    The greatest Astro team.

    Also, the most disappointing.

It was very selfish of him to go and make himself sick and try to die.

He was more than decent, his .835 OPS was topped by only Joe Mauer and Yadi Molina among everyday catchers that year. Only Weiters hit more HR. Castro was a very good offensive catcher in 13

    What the hell happened

2013 Castro partially benefitted from BABIP luck but also hit for a lot more power. His k/bb rates were pretty close to his career average. Not sure if his swing changed or what.
