The Gordon pitch? Who knows.... at the top of the inning, the ump called strike 3 on Hochevar's pitch to Correa that was almost in the exact same location (low/inside), and Perez didn't do any sort of frame job. K-zone had it as a strike as well... hence,no frame job should have been required. I was frustrated as to why Gordon was even taking a pitch that close to the zone... even if he swings and makes contact, there was likely very little he could have done with a pitch there.
Yup, I was referencing the Gordon pitch. You are probably right, I think the ump was simply inconsistent. I guess I am just trying to talk myself into not hating Jason Castro as much as I do.
Castro is phenomenal at both calling and framing pitches. Maybe the pitch sequence to Perez is slightly different with him back there. Or it could have simply been a poorly executed pitch by Giles... at no point is a hanging slider a good idea. If he bounces it, Perez probably swings anyways.
His ERA numbers were posted. Those numbers include games for an entire season. 0.94 vs 2.74 The 2.74 is a very good number. Problem is, it's not good compared to 0.94. The 2.74 involved more pressure situations than the other stat. Now, in HOU, he's facing even more pressure (expectations)... and guess what, he has regressed even more so. Maybe he's just in a funk.. he has plenty time to improve. But it's not ludicrous to think he doesn't handle pressure well. I don't think dude will live up to his billing. Will GLADLY eat crow if I'm wrong. Hopefully the meal begins tonight.
Except that when you start with a small number of innings for a reliever and then break it down further into components, you end up with a very small and generally irrelevant sample size.
Context is important; he became the full-time closer July 28 (when the Phillies traded Papelbon); his line as the full-time closer: 1.71 ERA with 33 K and .958 WHIP in 26.1 IP. I think there's ample reason to be concerned - but this trade has a loooong shelf life, and it's way too early to regret it. He's young & he's never faced expectations of this magnitude... for some of us, that was understood. The rest of you (most of you, frankly) printed World Series tickets the day we made the trade and, well - now the world is going to end. Relax. He'll (probably) figure it out.
... or, one can ignore facts and data that are available. It appears he pitched equal innings in save vs non-save situations in '15. There's no denying the enormous discrepancy in 2.74 vs .94 Now, under increased pressure, there's increased suckage. This does make me think a little better of him.
Does the "save situation have to be the 9th" in those stats? I know a pitcher can enter a game in the 8th with a 3 run lead or less and it's considered a save situation, even though if he comes out in the 9th he ends up getting a hold Some of those numbers could have been set up innings with the lead
Yep, the Fiers Feldman starts have been better second time through, hopefully Fister does well tonight Need Springer and Gomez to get going
Your kidding right? We need everyone not named White, Rasmus, Correa, Tucker or Altuve to get going. I know its easy to lay all the blame for our poor start on the pitching, but in reality, nearly our entire offense to this point has relied on 5 guys. Take a look. http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/stats/batting/_/name/hou/houston-astros
That is not unusual in baseball. We aren't relying on Valbuena (who is doing fine, IMO, even if the stats don'r show it yet) or Jason Castro to do much.
No actually, I'm not kidding If those 5 keep hitting well and Springer and Gomez get going, the offense will be absolutely outstanding If you are counting on Castro to get hot well ...
Royals are the champs and they've needed the Astros to make mistakes to win both games...just like in the playoffs last season. They're doing exactly what champs do. Astros still learning not to make mistakes against champs. It only takes 1 error as we've seen...this is sum NEXT LEVEL CHIT they obviously gotta figure out once and for all
Not trying to get into a pissing contest But you just named 3 guys, 2 are the ones I mentioned and you asked if I was kidding....the other doesn't play a lot As I said, we need Springer and Gomez to get going, didn't know that would be a controversial statement This forum
Fair enough. But several guys are WAY underachieving. I dont expect them to be hot, but I do expect them above the Mendoza line.
