I always found this place to be really serene and beautiful during the daytime. I actually preferred to walk across that bridge if I needed to get from the main campus up to the stadium area. Not once did a thought cross my mind that someone could get murdered there. Crazy.

Check out my revised response. This affair reminds me of that old prison show Oz that came on HBO. At the beginning of every show, they'd show what dumb or stupid act a convict did to land in prison. I recall asking myself if anyone could be that stupid. Well, when you read the arrest warrant, the answer is an unqualified YES! I mean: You are going to lurk around an area under video survellience, attack and murder an innocent girl, steal her stuff, attempt to burn some of that stuff in full view of witnesses and then store the rest in your locker? Honestly? You take a girl's life for her backpack? I hope he serves his entire life sentence in solitary.

Given what's been posted now, yeah, it will take an interesting defense approach from what we know. I guess the defense will be: suspect found unfortunate dead body and made terrible, desperate decision to lift the person's belongings, and then, um, start limping, and then, um, start burning the possessions later b/c knew it would look bad. (?)

Assuming this is all what it seems, this is ultimately good news for justice and for the victim's family.

I hate questioning every feel-good story you see in the paper now (based on the article about this kid I mean). Double ugh.

The worst part is that the warrant states that the suspect initially left the area after he was unsuccessful in his first attempts to break into a van but later returned.

If the victim had just left a little earlier or had noticed him lurking around and following her maybe this tragedy could have been prevented.

I'm also surprised no one heard anything. The warrant makes it sound like she put up a struggle. Overall a pretty sad situation.

Ever since she left for college, I have pleaded with my daughter not to be out late at might walking alone like this. She continues to do that to this day walking to her car alone. I would have thought that UT had some sort of campus escort service for female students who had to be out late after class. The only sad thing about this is that since this fool is only 17, he cannot get the death penalty.

UT does have a SURE Walk program that students can use to get escorted from one area of campus to another.

    http://utsg.org/projects/sure-walk/

SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO to name a few, and include both males and females.

An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. after the first two weeks of the fall and spring semesters. SURE Walk does not operate during the summer. Upon ordering a walk, two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods.

    (NSFW)

he probably wouldn't be at UT. He would be at Harvard.

It's rare that Travis County seeks the death penalty but if he would have been 18 and this turns out to be a sexual assault and robbery than it probably would have happened. Brandon Daniel got the death penalty for shooting a cop. It didn't help that he was giggling afterward. Areli Carbajal Escobar got it for a rape/murder. He had a very long criminal history which factored into it.

There are 7 people on Death Row from Travis County. Harris (Houston) County has about 90. Bexar (San Antonio) has 12. Dallas has 29 and Tarrant (Ft Worth) County has 18.

AUSTIN, TX (KTRK) -- The sister of the 17-year-old accused of killing University of Texas student Haruka Weiser is coming to the defense of her younger brother.

In an exclusive interview with abc13, Meechail Criner's sister says she's still trying to process the gravity of the charge against her brother.

Criner's sister invited Eyewitness News into her home. We're not using her name because she says she had already faced a lot of backlash.

"It's actually really hard to look at his picture because that's who he is," she said, pointing to a photo of Criner on the wall.

The photo was taken a couple years ago when they were all in Texarkana celebrating a birthday.

Criner's sister says they had a tough upbringing. Their mother was a drug addict who committed suicide. Since then, they bounced back and forth between their grandmother's care and Child Protective Services.

She says Criner had mental health issues but still stands by him.

"He's slow on a lot of things. It takes him longer to pick up than the average person, but he's not slow enough to say I'm going to kill this person and take her purse and carry it with me," she said. "No one is that slow. Meechail is not that slow. Meechail is not that crazy to do that."

Criner's sister is now looking for legal help to defend her brother.

Tonight on Eyewitness News at 10pm, hear why she says CPS bears some of the blame and the message she has for the victim's family.

I feel like this was a part of the message that Season 4 of the Wire was sending.

The evidences revealed so far are pretty damning. They'll have to make some major blunders to not get this guy convicted

If skins colors don't matter, how did BLM get started?

    You misunderstand black lives matter.

Skin color does matter right now. BLM is trying to make black lives equal to white lives. BLM wants equality, effectively saying that skin color does not matter.

Skin color matters when it's convenient and doesn't matter when it's inconvenient huh?

That's terrible. If she was sexually assaulted, there's no chance of rehabilitation for this guy.

Doesn't he have a cocktail of serious mental health issues. I read schizophrenia, autism, FAS plus another. This dude should have been in a ward with four padded walls since birth. Rehabilitation is not an option now or ever.
