I mentioned Fister's speed... with Fister's command... wasn't going to cut it if he consistently pitched 83-85. Maddux is a whole other level of both command/movement... but even he saw lesser results when his speed went down (albeit they were still great numbers... although the year you mentioned was a slight anomaly, preceded by a steady rise in his ERA to above 3, and was his last elite season overall). As it is, Doug has done very well tonight... but I'm not surprised the Brewers have had some hard hits and greater contact rate with more exposure.
Appears it will be Neshek-Sipp/Harris-Giles-Gregerson as the pecking order (with Sipp/Harris coming in sooner for Neshek if there ever is a lefty hitter).
Really can't get away with pitching Neshek against lefties.... but that was a god-awful pitch regardless.
Well, neither do the Astros... hence why he's now pitching in the 6th vs. the 8th, and they acquired and re-signed quality pitchers in the bullpen. But, doesn't mean he can't be effective against right-handed batters mostly... and doesn't mean he still can't be used to protect leads.
I'm in no way saying we should just completely give up on him this early. I just would like to see him put a nice string of outings together. He'll need some more time to do that though. Hopefully he can turn out to be a reliable 6th/7th type pitcher.
