It's hard to tell from the facts in this thread. Will the Rockets have an extra $1.2 million of cap space if he doesn't start, or not? It sounds clear that it shouldn't matter that much to DMo. But an extra $1.2 million is an extra $1.2 million. The Rockets would be dumb to start him these last three games if that's the case. Start someone else and send DMo to the scoring table immediately.
Realize that all the players in the league will make note of this. If it is irrelevant you do what is right by the player even if you don't intend to re-sign him because wherever he goes he will talk and word will spread. This is much more of an image situation than a money one, IMHO. DD
aelliott and BimaThug do seem to contradict each other. The CBA also somewhat contradicts itself. It says QOs are cap holds. But of course, also says that 200% of previous salary for rookie scale players coming off their 4th year counts towards team salary. BimaThug's post is saying the 200% is DMo's hit against our cap, because it's higher than either possible QO. Thus saying the QO doesn't matter, whatsoever, unless DMo actually wants to sign a one-year contract despite his injuries like basketballholic keeps wanting to say....or the Rockets extend the Maximum QO. lulz
They rockets want to be able to give him a higher qualifying offer in the hopes that he accepts it . Both the team and Dmo can benefit from a one year deal where we all know better about injury concerns after that season . A one year deal does place a lot of risk on Dmo , but if he truly believes he is healthy it may be better for him in the long run . Also off topic , but Beasley is our best trade asset , I wouldn't be surprised to see him go .
Both of them will be goners next season. Along with Howard and Smith. So I wonder what type of master plan D.Morey has in store.
Cap hold for restricted free agents is the LARGER of their "free agent amount" or their qualifying offer. For D-Mo, his free agent amount is about $5.72 million. His current qualifying offer will be about $3.2 million, increasing to about $4.3 million if he starts one more game this season. His cap hold will be $5.72 million either way.
