Having DMo on a lower qualifying offer has no financial impact on D-Mo or the Rockets since the offer will never be accepted. The QO does count against our team salary so if you are trying to maximize your cap space to sign a FA or two then it's a smart move.
He's good enough to have guarded Dirk, Meijiri, and Pachulia as well as have them guard him. That matchup would have at least made those guys have to work so much harder due to size. Dmo can still move well for his size.
It was a joke! I don't believe they aren't starting him or aren't playing him because they want to get him cheaper or whatever. There is no conspiracy against DMo. This same topic was just discussed.
Not only does this not really even matter to DMo, as aelliott points out (since he won't sign a one-yr QO), but it is also only a difference of ~$1.2m. The "starter criteria" larger QO = 125% of the previous year salary for the 9th pick in that draft class, versus 125% of DMo's actual salary for a 20th pick. That's roughly $4m vs $2.8m.
How so? DMo started tonight. One more, and he gets a $1.2m higher one-yr Qualifying Offer that he will never sign.
There is absolutely zero impact to the Rockets or DMo. No way DMo signs for the qualifying offer either way since he can easily get an offer sheet that's substantially more. His cap hold is still $5.72 million so it has no bearing on Rocket's cap flexibility for the summer either.
Not only that, but D-Mo's free agent cap hold is bigger than even the larger qualifying offer, so the ultimate impact on the Rockets' cap room is pretty much non-existent.
Thread should be titled, "Capela not starting due to incompetence reasons?" The Rockets were elite (arguably the best in the league) at defending against points in the paint, preventing rebounds, and had something like a 41% offensive rebound rate (elite) when Howard/Capela were on the court together. After watching the Rockets get destroyed on rebounding vs. the Suns I looked into this. It is just terrible coaching/general managing to not have Capela out there more. I'm still a big DMo fan don't get me wrong, his defense is very good. The main disaster lately has been playing Brewer down the stretch (or any minutes period).
If he doesn't start 2 of the last 4, it would seem like a move to lower his QO number - it is not likely he takes it, but he might because he can prove his health and be an UFA the next year. It would be a dick move and a cheap one if the Rockets do it, I prefer to think that they start him, and get him a higher QO number so they can say "See, we did this for you" in case he does want to try the QO. Be interesting to see. DD
Dmo is super mediocre. I don't get the hype. Can't stay healthy, can't shoot, is 7 feet tall but doesn't block shots. Low post production (and his numbers are bad) doesn't mean as much in the NBA as it used to. He's not a productive NBA starter at this point - probably not even a rotation player on a contender.
