It's a strategy that most teams use.

    He was a terrible GM.

Its easy to see how much of a catastrophic failure the Philly experiment is when you have teams like Boston and Portland who focus on player development of young nba talent over bottoming out for unproven talent. And both of them are young, with assets, and in the playoffs. Add to it the catastrophic culture that went along with Philly. Nothing about his time there looks good at all.

His draft picks have been catastrophes, MCW, Nerlens Noel (still unproven), Embid (never will play in the league), Saric (who could be good, when will he play in the league, who the hell really knows), Okafor who doesn't really fit in the modern NBA.

When the picks immediately or very near to your picks are already substantially better looking assets, something is wrong with your scouting team and decision making.

Okafor goes 1 spot before Porzingis, Embid 1 spot before Aaron Gordon, Saric 1 spot before LaVine, MCW 4 spots before Greek Freak & 6 before Schroder....and if you look at his 2nd round picks he took Jerami Grant 2 spots before Jokic. All GMs make mistakes and miss out, but when you strike out as much as he has, considering he's put all his weight into building through the draft, it means you CAN"T have that many screw ups.

What good is asset collection if you're striking out that poorly on your draft picks?

Hinkie didn't do anything good for that franchise. They have progressively been worse and worse each year.

    Hinkie fail, Mauri fail

I wouldn't be surprised if Murray hires Hinkie and calls it a big summer acquisition

Oh yeah, things are really starting to turn up. They just won their 10th game of the season after starting 1-30. All this, after winning 19 and 18 games his first two years in Philly.

He was in way over his head as GM.

[rQUOTEr]In a 13-page letter to members of the Sixers' ownership group, obtained by ESPN.com, Hinkie wrote:

"There has been much criticism of our approach. There will be more. A competitive league like the NBA necessitates a zig while our competitors comfortably zag. We often chose not to defend ourselves against much of the criticism, largely in an effort to stay true to the ideal of having the longest view in the room.

"... Given all the changes to our organization, I no longer have the confidence that I can make good decisions on behalf of investors in the Sixers -- you. So I should step down. And I have."

I'm not sure he was in over his head, but I think he took his stance of tanking way too far. He took it so far to the point where they had little to show 3 years down the line.

Basically...I think he completely overestimated the amount of leeway he had with this plan, but I do think he was capable. I guess we'll never really find out, though.

It actually is amazing to think about how he set himself up for his own failure...how often do you see that in life? How often do you see someone sacrifice his own career for the sake of an organization? What Hinkie didn't realize is that loyalty doesn't run downhill, owners never have loyalty to a "process" or to a "philosophy" or an employee, thats how they avoid being blamed when it fails. Ultimately the ownership is at the will of the fans.

I mean its as if he literally has been digging his own grave for years. At any point in the past 3 years he could have just made a trade or made a move that would have made them better in the present. But he persisted on his path of the future, as if it was some Oz like place that would just magically appear.

Look for the hit pieces that will come out of the Philly media. Watch any of his old post-draft press conferences, Hinkie was an ineffective communicator on all fronts

Philadelphia knew the plan when they hired him. I'm not sure what else they were expecting. They knew his plan was a long game yet they didn't fully commit to it after only 2 years which made the team still horrible in the present and not set for the future. I don't necessarily have a problem with his approach, but some of the moves they forced this year were just straight up stupid. There was absolutely no value in adding guys like Ish Smith and Elton Brand to the current roster, yet Colangelo wanted it.

Hinkie has won pretty much every trade he has made as a GM.

His draft choices has been pretty weak though. I don't know why he always picked the injured big man.

    Terrible move.

Sixers are loaded with assets, just need the opportunity to cash in.

This is what I think was the hold up.

I think they knew it would be a big time tank, but I wonder if they expecting *this* level of tank.
