Since we've traded away so many of our young guys over the last year or so, I figured it would be fun to track their progress this year in a dedicated thread. For example, today Domingo Santana has singled and scored a run, Jonathan Villar hit a home run off MadBum, and Chris Carter has an RBI walk. I'm also curious how Vince Velasquez and Mark Appel do this year in Philly.
1) I had to check to make sure that was actually the Philles AAA team's name. I thought you just made it up...Very glad it is actually the name of the team; 2) Come on, how is he suppose to compete with the likes of Brett Oberhowitzer for a roster spot?
I think both Villar and Santana will have breakout years. Villar will sting more since they didn't get much for him.
Vince Velasquez with 6 scoreless innings. 9 strikeouts but 3 walks. Command still a bit of an issue but he pitched well considering against a good Mets team.
The pitching staff is dominant, the offense isn't good at all. Having said that, VV always seemed like the biggest giveaway in that trade. Appel had the hype, but he's the one who's actually shown promise coming up. He could end up being a very good pitcher, and has front end stuff.
Yea the only real issue with VV is health, has a history of struggling to stay healthy. Add in the pitching depth we still have in the system (Corpus hasn't given up an earned run in it's first three games) and giving him up for a dominant pen arm was worth it
Vincent Velasquez First start... 6.0 IP 0 runs 0 ERs 3 hits 9 Ks 3 BBs Same guy who last season struggled to finish batters Ks 9 in 6 innings
Cosart was given an 8-0 lead, but couldn't make it through the 5th inning. Gave up 3 runs with 100+ pitches in 4.2 innings.
I wouldn't say he struggled to finish batters. He averaged more than a K per inning last year and projects to be about a K per inning or slightly better starting pitcher.
Velasquez has 14 strikeouts today in 8 innings pitched. 3 hits thus far. Lunhow is looking like he got raped in that Giles trade thus far.
