I am surprised at how much press it is getting. The U.S. Justice Dept has already responded that it will review the documents and go after anyone who has evaded taxes.

This is going to be huge.

    haha wut

The system in 2008 was saved by drug money according to the UN.

Wachovia was caught red-handed giving carte blanche to the Mexican drug cartels and settled in civil court.

THAT'S NOT GOING TO SINK ANYTHING...but seeing as that's the line you've drawn, ask and ye shall receive.

    Let's try obstruction of justice.

Don't like that? Money laundering is on the menu too.

This is EXACTLY the type of organization that does squeaky clean tax avoidance and 401k planning XD

If this amount of dirt doesn't lead to the death of the 20th century version of extract resources, hide most of them in offshore accounts capitalism (which is not at all society itself), well, there's always apathy.

Seems to me that there is unlikely to be any American political figures in this data, but there will be lots of data about the leadership of some of our chief rivals. Some of it is bound to be useful for asset freezes or other sorts of economic sanctions. So, in balance, seems to me like this is a net positive for US interests.

Mass protests in Iceland calling for PM to resign after a secret offshore company he co-owned with his wife was revealed to have shares in banks his administration bailed out:

Another bombshell incoming--"Major French political party" about to be tied up. Given the response it looks like the Front National is about to lose their s**t.

Amazing watching government officials and bank reps suddenly championing privacy rights.

Given this list of people who fund the US-based Center for Public Integrity, which in turn 100% funds the ICIJ, I'm beginning to wonder about why we're still waiting for more US names to emerge. Credit to this dude's blog post.

Some people have discovered that in fact US tax dodgers tend to work with Fonseca's competitors, which is why there will not be a complete picture of their shameful activities in this leak. Saw this here. Some decent background info there.

Wikileaks is suggesting the ICIJ has been suspiciously soft on US individuals and mega corporations. They have asked Twitter whether they should release the Panama Papers in searchable format publicly, something which the ICIJ haven't done.

The ICIJ has said they will not released all the documents to protect addresses, passport copies, and personal private information that's irrelevant to tax evasion/avoidance.

Eventually it seems that government secrets will get leaked also. Things are going to get very interesting the next 10-20 years.

So, this is just the 4th largest of these institutions. What's going on with the others?

I agree. It is on the very bottom of the page of fox news and CNN. They rather cover that Cruz and Sanders won Wisconsin than political leaders are embezzling money.

American political leaders? Or FWIW, even American citizens? If no, then yeah... The 2016 Presidential Election is little more important than what Putin and the Prime Minister of Iceland is doing with their personal money.

Call me when the speculation is gone, and we can point to specific guilty American citizens.

No less than the end of 20th century capitalism? Wow. Maybe we should wait and see what shakes loose from all this first. I'm assuming, by "different legal regimes for the super-rich vs the rest of the world" you are expecting to see evidence of the super rich being judged under different laws from the rest of us? I'm pretty confident that if there have been laws broken prosecution will follow.

And the "governing class" - are we in Victorian England?

I think the point of "different legal regimes" is that laws won't be broken, because they were changed or written to allow this behavior. In the financial world (and in others,) there are many policies which are legal but not moral. Like, really, really, really not moral.

Of course, this doesn't preclude the discovery of truly illegal behavior: laundering drug money, sex trafficking, funding terrorism, etc.

These papers are just a bunch of false documents designed to character assassinate Putin. Putin's not the most squeaky clean guy out there to be sure, but the govt seems awfully keen on looking into this despite the fact that we have our own criminal here in Hilary Clinton who they seem content on ignoring.
