Don't you love Baby Boomers? They paid SIGNIFICANTLY less for college and had a a higher minimum wage at the Federal level adjusted for inflation. Baby Boomers could actually afford college working part time at a fast food joint. Today? LOLOLOL. And now those selfish bastards call the current generation 'entitled'. **** them.
Higher enrollment numbers than during the baby boomer years. Also, probably higher international enrollment, too. Lots of Chimese grad students when I was undergrad at UH.
So California increases cost of labor, in the meantime, California has a lot of illegal immigrants. Hiring illegal immigrants is a lot cheaper, now with the increased cost of labor, illegal immigrant hiring is even a bigger bargain. I don't see inflation will be that much of deal, ppl just hire more illegals then.
It depends on the city. I think the minimum wage should definitely be higher because $7.25/hr is ridiculously low, but $15/hr is best, at first, in cities where real estate prices are the highest. A place like Austin should have a higher minimum wage than a Lubbock or a Laredo.
Hey, look, it's the last remaining non affluent white non Trump Republican. This hackneyed Horatio Alger-lite line of garbage may have worked well on folks like yourself 10 years ago. but see how well it works now, just ask Marco Rubio or Jeb! or Chris Christie or Scott Walker or Rick Perry or....you get the idea.
Hi. Welcome to "arguing about immigrants on the Internet" This is where it's pointed out that most illegal immigrants are paid minimum wage or higher, with forged paperwork, rather than at slave wages.
Illegal immigrants don't work minimum wage jobs. They work labor jobs that are off the books. McDonalds isn't going to hire illegal employees because of a spike in the min wage.
I'm actually positive they do, having went to College in the past decade and having my wife still in college. College debt is more a function of private institutions and the ease of access to debt than anything else.
Yeah, there was definitely a selfish portion of the baby boomers who decided to become Reaganites or conservative/"libertarian" types after a few years of being liberals in college. The Clintons are somewhat like these folks-- not Bernie. Now don't get mad at me, Deckard. I have a few friends who are basically like hey our children have gone through college so what is all this stuff about free college now for other people's kids?
I have seen many people with different experiences than you. Pell pays for almost nothing if you earn any substantial income (as many nontraditional students do).
Trust fund babies do it better. I don't see why people don't consider subsidized college in the same way as they see tax breaks for corporate development. Both are investments in future tax income. A person unable to attend college or trade school is less likely to earn enough to pay income taxes and more likely to draw on public assistance. And why don't we see the draw on public assistance as a tax on everyone? Letting Walmart book billions in profits while they run roughshod over traditional business by paying less than a livable income and exploiting part-time workers without benefits costs us as much as the price increases to raise the minimum wage. It's the net bottom line that counts but I never see that argued.
Everything Wal-Mart is doing is legal. Trade with China. Minimum wage. Part time workers. I'm sure they benefit from the increase in labor supply due to illegal immigration.
At $15 dollars an hour Restaurants will simply replace servers with IPAD's. Been to LaGuardia Airport lately? Or a McDonalds in France? All Kiosks and IPads. You can't force people to pay more than a service is worth when there are alternatives.
Then those people should be able to afford college. We've received Pell for years. When my wife first started college, the government was paying her about $2000 beyond what it cost for her to go to school per semester. Now, she threw that away by quitting school and losing Georgia's HOPE scholarship, but Pell has continued to cover her tuition costs. Our income has been about $40K annually over that period. If people didn't borrow more than they actually needed. If they didn't pick schools they couldn't afford. We'd dramatically decrease the student loan problem. We need to do better educating kids on finance in school and better counseling for parents and students looking at college. I do believe we need to do something to combat the rising cost of college, but I think we are ignoring bigger problems.
Even without $15 minimum wage, the automation is coming soon enough. This is a far bigger threat than illegal immigrant, ISIS etc. There are not too many jobs that automation will not be able to replace in the next twenty to thirty years.
Why not? Do you know AI can now write novels? Teach itself how to play the game of go, learn natural languages? You won't be needing factory workers, store clerks, pharmacist, doctors, designers, etc in the future, even soldiers wil be robots.
People need to keep in mind that it's just California that is raising the minimum wage in this instance and it's going to be raised incrementally, so it won't just instantly jump to $15/hour. I think it will be a great way to see how a minimum wage hike affects a large state like California, sort of like how we've gotten to see how policies that Republicans dream about have affected Kansas. The real question is will people actually pay attention to the results?
Yes, it apparently will phase in through 2022, so fairly slowly. In fact $15 will be a lot less in 2022, but it should make sure those earners at least won't go backwards.
