    Duffy ain't making the squad.

When Straily keeps that ball down he is very effective.

I think with Cotts release, Wandy is now the 12th pitcher to make the roster. Lefty and an innings eater.

Also, I venture to say White takes the 1B spot for the opener and Tucker will get the DH with Gattis on the DL (likely). I think that makes the most sense and should make all Astros fans happy/excited. Reed gets some seasoning in AAA, we aren't forced to play Singleton, which we probably would have a year ago had White not emerged, and Tucker is IMO more than adequate replacement at DH, could possibly be even better than Gattis with a higher OBP.

Just her opinion of course, but thought I'd put it here.

not sure I agree with this. Stassi will be out for April and basically we'll need a backup catcher for like 5-6 games. Why not take a flyer on Pena or Heinemann? They both seem to be good defensive catchers which is all you really care about for a backup , especially one for only a couple of games... I say give the young guns a shot.

Because you can add Corp, and then waive him after Stassi comes back. If you add Pena or Heineman to the 40-man roster, the team will have to keep them there or risk losing them.

What has Stassi done though to entrench himself as a backup catcher we can and should depend on? I am not saying that he cannot be a solid back up catcher, but I'm just not sure about it. Even before the injury, I had my doubts about him continuing to develop, and emerging as the main back up catcher.

What couldn't Corp (or another external candidate) be a better back-up catcher for our team this year? Personally, I am still holding out hope for Lucroy, and since Keuchel loves Castro so much, Castro can slide into the backup catcher role, and get a couple of starts a week.

Guarantee you that's not simply "her opinion".

I'm sure she heard rumblings (perhaps very substantial) of this, and that's her clever way of staking some claim to "calling that" if it happens.

It's just another manifestation of her worthless, hackish "journalism".

Because there is upside to someone who was once a solid prospect and hasn't had a real shot yet. And we may need someone to develop and take over for Castro, so this gives us a real look at him for that as well.

Doesn't mean someone like Lucroy isn't still on the radar at the right price. But vs. someone like Corporan...I think they are smart to think about the future and about upside, given that the Corporan-level replacements won't give you much more than even "baseline" Stassi.

Fair enough, and thanks for the response, I appreciate it. I certainly see the logic there, but what exactly about Stassi's minor league career leads you to believe he can be a solid regular? I am not saying that it cannot happen, but sell me on some of his pros. Personally, I don't think we have a viable catching option that could be our catcher of the future, and that worries me. I guess that's my main concern, I have absolutely no problem with Stassi over Corp, or Stassi as the main backup this year to show us what he's got. But as this is probably Castro's last year, we need to re-stock the catching pipeline fast.

    Good bye Singleton.

You got a great contract per value.

I don't think so. It is just a clear logical fit.

The only question is whether its a AAA or waiver type of goodbye. Probably the former, but one has to wonder what he could possibly prove there.

    He still has options left.

They will send him to AAA.

Hopefully Reed can start off hot and get on the team quickly.

White has to be the starter and his high OPS suggest he's what this lineup has needed the last two years.

It would be miraculous if he ever makes it as starter for the Astros at this point. Two guys leapfrogged him in SP (Reed/White).

So at least one of those guys would have to fail miserably, everyone coming up behind him at 1B would have to tank, and he would have to play the best AAA ball of his career. Not gonna happen.

just curious out of the contenders for first base, who is the best defensively? I feel like Marwin used to sub in late in games for defensive purposes..is it him? Or someone else between White/Reed/Singleton/Marwin

    Watching direct TV in Houston

Had the Braves station and not Root Sports.

They are doing a documentary on Greg Maddux. For the baseball nuts out here, this is special TV on right now.

Reed is a vastly underrated defensive player... He has soft hands, a strong arm, solid reflexes and a good target. He isn't mobile like Bagwell but he is pretty solid.

Long term (assuming his knees hold up) I don't think Reed will be subbed out of games.

My guess is Marwin gets the call late this season but none of them are horrendous.

Actually he had a 1-2-3 inning

Then gave up a hit to start another inning and the runner came around to score after he was gone

Doubt he will be asked to go more than an inning at a time much

He had 1-2-3 inning, but the first 2 outs they hit the ball very hard. The third one was also hard hit, but not like the first two. Actually, the hit was more like a blooper and then a bunt out. It was the first inning the problem.
