Do you have problem about censorship? How do you feel about what's happening in colleges today, and don't say it's an isolated incident because it really isn't. I can pull up 100's of events that have taken in colleges in the past 5 years that would really make you cringe.
Well, he doesn't have the authority to right now, but every action he has taken so far is indicative of the fact that he can't tolerate anything negative being said about him. Since he doesn't have power to limit speech through executive orders (yet) he has done so through threats and lawsuits. If he's doing that as a candidate, he really has nothing to hold back if he becomes president. Donald Trump wants to limit speech and the press, and whole number of other things that go against the constitution (banning people of a religious group..etc). I'm not saying that you shouldn't vote for him, just that that can't possible be reason you would want to vote for him because it is in fact the opposite of what is true. If its because "he speaks his mind" as a lot of people supporting him point out that makes a lot more sense.
I don't believe in limiting speech and stuff like that on campuses, people should be free to express their viewpoints to a degree it doesn't interfere with someone else's right to a proper education. I went to a pretty conservative university , and let me tell you...some of the stuff being said is the type of stuff you have to stop. People having booths in the middle handing out a bunch of flyers saying muslims, jews and gay people are going to hell. When those individuals leave class, they shouldn't have to listen to hate speech on a campus they pay tuition at just like everybody else. For the most part, the stuff still goes on. So while the liberals take it overboard....believe me so do the conservatives and one of those is more harmful than the other since it involves open racism and discrimination.
Having spent my career on college campuses, I can pull up 10's of thousands of events that show just the opposite of this Fox News "evil university" meme you folks are pushing all the time. Have you personally spent much time on a university campus? Recently? If you had, you would see some very real problems, but not the problems that Fox News would have you believe. A very real problem is that our high schools simply do not prepare our kids to succeed at the college level, for one. For another, a growing and largely unmentioned tragedy is that about 10% of nation's college students are suffering from depression or debilitating anxiety, and nobody has any clue why they arrive at their 19th birthday in this state. "Liberal endoctrination" (sic) is the least of our worries. How to rigorously educate a very fragile and distressed generation is a bigger worry, by far, if you want to talk higher ed.
Yes yes yes. A thousand times. Things like that affect young people to the degree that they aren't able to function in school (where they are paying butloads of tuition) and are more prone to depression and committing suicide. Just about everybody I knew (all students at the top of their major too I may add..) had at least a semester or two where they really did feel that way. Going to a place that openly discriminates or holds strong racial/religious undertones goes a LONG way to making people emotionally unstable. The fact is that most of the people commenting about "PC bull****" haven't in fact been to college campuses or have been on the end where they have had nothing to be discriminated against. Its easy to dismiss everything that way.
Maybe those moderate liberal students should stand up and denounce the actions of the extremists that are giving them a bad name. The silence is deafening.
I understand someones speech can be hurtful but you either accept that we live in a open minded society where every form of speech is tolerable or we don't accept anything. I read somewhere that 50 percent of millennials want to limit free speech. What's deemed as offensive to some might not be to others. At least we're not UK or Canada where free speech can sometimes get you arrested. Just today I read this. Scary stuff. http://mashable.com/2016/03/24/croydon-man-tweets-brussels/#D_GwMPBA8Zq3
An excellent post, B-Bob, and very much on target. Not that those your post is aimed at will pay attention, not if the truth is inconvenient.
But still people like Melissa Click exists in college campuses and just because there are other problems on campuses as you say, it does not mean we can't tackle both.
The only rights to free speech are reserved against prosecution by the government. Free speech is also limited by civil law for libel and slander. Other than those, when you decide to say or not say something, the consequences that follow are all your own. The Constitution does not ensure your right to free speech without repercussions from your school, church, or social organizations and it doesn't mean people can't yell right back in your face.

Many who support Trump face waves of harassment and threats. The shoe is on the other foot. I hope it fits well.
A lot of people who are decried as SJWs get death and rape threats just because. Every time I've interacted with an "anti-PC" on here or elsewhere, they act like their world falls apart when a thought or idea bothers them, nevermind getting threatened with violence or rape. Like you say: the shoe is on the other foot. I hope it fits well.
HAHAHA!!!!, Obama's WAR ON Whistle Blowers is unprecedented. But that's not a problem, Obama gets a pass. Yikes!!! That's scary. The guys a real jerk sure, but to get arrested?!?! Are we moving to criminalizing manners and conscience? What's next, thought crime being enforced by thought police?!?!
I have clearly stated that it's a problem with both sides. Everyone needs to dial back the rhetoric. Unfortunately, a lot of people here don't agree and peg it on one side only, which ensures a continuation of the nonsense.
I think modern journalism has a problem. You basically have to be complete r****ds like Gawker, and spit in the face of a judges orders, to actually get repercussions. A side effect of the move from print to online and fast being better than accurate. Either way a free market solution that Trump suggested could possibly clean it up.
I found it funny that B-Bob thinks political correctness doesn't exist and all this talk about it is some kind of right wing conspiracy that only Fox News broadcasts.
When Jerry Seinfeld's act is too controversial for a college campus, you know something has gone terribly wrong.
"A free market solution" = overturning New York Times Co. v. Sullivan and possibly New York Times Co. v. United States? A free market solution is getting sued for current libel standards as set by Sullivan--actual malice. Like what happened with Gawker and HULK THE HOGAN. I swear to God, does nobody understand the f**king First Amendment in this thread
