Lin and Asik each played here two seasons and each were paid $5m per season for those years. Hardly big money.
So we don't but you used them as an example then aelliot corrected you. Ok just need to know which side of the pancake we're on at the moment.
The plan was simple- Both contracts were for 3 years/$24m, they weren't huge contracts even with the poison pill final year. If either guy turned out to be a star or even a very good player then that was a bargain contract. If they weren't working out or if we needed to free up space then we would move them prior to the final season ( which is what happened).
Seems like Williams would be an obvious target. Great shooting stretch 4 who is capable at rebounding and defense. We don't have any power forwards who have proven capable at just about anything this year, and we are always griping about needing a stretch 4. I would hope Marvin Williams is a target. Seems like a no-brainer.
The 1st rounder wasn't really the cost for Lin, but the cost for Kpap, 3Za, Dorsey, Josh Smith and Jason Terry as we had to trade him to clear space to eventually sign those guys. I haven't really kept tabs on Marv Williams tbh, but he seems like the type of guy teams always overrate so maybe not that good a target because he has name recognition and a stat stuffer, he's the type of guy dumb teams like the mavs like to throw max contracts to. At this point i'd roll with Beasley (who has played amazingly great so far) and just preserve that max space to sign KD or another max guy.
You don't think that poison pill had anything to do with our having to give up a first rounder to give up Lin? Basically, I am saying having Lin play for us cost us more than $5M a year. We basically signed him to $8M a year and now he is playing for $2M a year.
We gave a first rounder to get rid of Lin and we received a first rounder for Asik. Those two cancel each other out, right? Really it was a net positive for us since we gave LA our pick (#27) and we received the Pelican's pick (#18). So in the end we ended up moving up from #27 to #18. The net was $10M for 2 years of Lin and $10M for 2 years of Asik. Now if you want to include costs for suffering through the Lin fans then you might have a point.
It might be argued that we could have traded Lin for a lower price had we shopped longer. But we needed to get the cap space for Bosh. It was somewhat of a rushed deal. But we'll never know.
