You still have Savage and you could still draft a QB, both better options than allowing Hoyer to even sit on the sidelines.
I'm not convinced that Savage is worth anything. But if trading Hoyer guarantees they will draft a QB, I'm all for it. I would love to take Dak Prescott in rd 3 if he's there.
That's fine, but we KNOW that Hoyer isn't worth anything at all. I'd rather take the risk on Brock, Savage, and random guy off the street or out of the draft before letting that scrub touch the football again.
several teams? Several??? (pinches self) Are they in the NFL? (pinches harder just to make sure this isn't a dream)... if 'several' teams are this desperate, maybe Rick can get a (gulp) 3rd, 4th or 5th rounder?! (Slaps self back into reality)..ok 6th or 7th is a victory. (drops head at the realization)
What kind of loser mentality is this? Look, if Osweiler ain't gonna work out for the Texans, meaning we are not going to be 12-4, may as well going for 4-12 instead of getting that shltty 8-8 or 9-7 every year.
If the Texans aren't in need of the extra cap space, it's not the worst idea to keep him. Only downside I can see is BoB defaulting back to Hoyer instead of Savage if Osweiler goes down or busts. As much as I disliked Hoyer, he's probably in the upper echelon of backup QBs IMO.
The scenario I'm thinking of is that the team is actually really good, 12-4 good, but Osweiler is going to miss 3 games because of a knee injury or something because he took a hit he shouldn't have. Do I want a 7-3 team to turn to Tom Savage to start 3 weeks in a row or Brian Hoyer? What I want is them to have the choice. Unless they can get something that can contribute. A 6th or 7th round pick is not interesting to me. Those are "Mr. Irrelevant" type players. 5th is shaky but maybe you get a kicker or some other special teams contributor. There is a chance those guys could work out of course and I wouldn't crush the team for making the deal, but I like the idea of Hoyer as an option. At least into camp where I can see Tom Savage compete.
Starting level NFL QBs are rare in the NFL. Someone will pull the trigger for Hoyer as a nice backup option. Look at what Chase Daniel got and his body of work isn't any better than Hoyer's. As for our team, I'd rather roll with Savage as a backup over Hoyer and use a late pick on a QB for the practice squad.
Just so No-yer to Hoyer. He is damaged goods in Houston after that embarrassing debacle in the playoffs. The guy doesn't have the 'it factor,' heck he doesn't even have a 'factor.' Osweiler is the clear starter, Savage is the guy we are grooming so let him get some reps in as the back up and see what he has, and Brandon Weeden was actually good in his 2 stints so I'd take him over Hoyer at this point. PLUS, we could use the $5M in cap to sign a TE--which would let us focus on best-available/need in the draft.
That is of course the other variable. If they intend to use that money to upgrade the team that is certainly valuable.
Yeah, with the amount of money the Texans invested in Osweiler, B'OB and Co. will be going down with the ship if it doesn't work out and they will be forced to play Brock (practically) no matter what barring injury. I think the cap space we'd get back from Hoyer is the real value..the 5-7th picks, meh, I'm with you...they usually don't turn into anything special. But the additional cap space certainly could be used to upgrade at TE, for example, which IMO is a big need and then they can focus on the OL in the draft and maybe WR. Also, I just think Hoyer is damaged goods in houston and we need that bad taste gone. Weeded and Savage should be decent backups and we won't win anything anyways if the backups are called upon--
You pretty much reiterated my point. If the Texans need the extra cash, then it's a no brainier cut. If they're done with FA signings and don't need the extra money, then not much of a reason other then to save McNair a little cash.
what does hoyer provide that is worth 5 mil a year? you can get better performances by signing waive guys ala yates and tweeden and for cheaper.
He could be nice insurance for the Jets if they lose Fitzy. I could see Indy and Titans take a look as a backup too.
Where is our old best friend. . . . CASH!!!! Traded for CASH!! I'm sure some kid needs a happy meal Rocket River
