The jury has awarded Erin Andrews $55 million in her civil lawsuit over the secret recording and release of a video showing her naked during a hotel stay.

The sportscaster's original suit asked for $75 million from the owner and operator of the Nashville, Tennessee, hotel where she was staying, and Michael David Barrett, the stalker who used a hacksaw to tamper with her room's peephole and record the video in 2008.

The jurors took photos with Andrews after the amount was announced, and she signed autographs, according to reports from inside the courtroom.

West End Hotel Partners, which owns and operates that Nashville Marriott at Vanderbilt University, has said Barrett's criminal actions were his responsibility, not theirs. Barrett was convicted in criminal court of stalking Andrews and sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

Andrews, 37, testified last week over the course of two days during the trial and broke down in tears at several points in talking about the effect the 2009 release of the video online has had on her personal life.

The closing arguments for both sides ended Friday and the jurors were sent into deliberations after arriving in court this morning.[/rQUOTEr]

No way this stands up on appeal.

 

uhh, how is Marriott liable? $55 million is an absurd amount of money.

 

I can't believe ESPN would only let her back on the air if she came on and did an interview about this incident....

 

what are the odds she gets paid even a fraction of that? you know homeboy doesn't have any money and marriott could appeal like crazy.

 

A guy could be wrongly convicted, spend 20 years in jail and maybe get $5 mil? but a chick who gets peeping tom'd can get $55 mil?

You have to love the US justice system.

 

Some of you guys must really hate women. Who cares how much she got payed. The woman was violated.

 

$28.5 million has to be paid by the guy, the rest by the hotel.

I don't know anything about that guy but I doubt he has $28.5 million to give.

 

Men get violated too! Are we not for equality? Do you really think that a man could get this type of award after being victimized like she was?

 

The court ruled that Marriott was liable because they gave the stalker her room number and booked him in an adjoining room next to hers where he was able to install the peephole from which he made the infamous video. Marriott showed a callous disregard for her privacy and hence they have to pay. They will appeal of course. They will most likely settle as this is really bad publicity for Marriott.

 

It's not worth $55 million.

 

Jesse Palmer is the male equivalent to Erin Andrews. If Jesse Palmer had this happen to him he wouldn't get the same money, but I believe he would get a substantial settlement too.
