The most credible reeports I have seen (it's difficult because his own accounts are so opaque and not trustworthy) put his track record as mixed at best. He certainly isn't a big player these days a la Tishman, Vornado or Durst or whatever.

According to at least one estimate, for all his purported wheeling and dealing and near bankruptcy, he is no more well off now (and potentially even has less)had he taken all of his money that he inherited from his father, invested it in a low risk index fund, and done...absolutely nothing.

His success is really conning people into thinking otherwise, like he's some sort of titan of industry.

I also think it's not accurate to suggest he tried and failed at other businesses - as has been document most of his business ventures (steaks, vodka, etc) are just licensing his name to somebody else. The business may have failed, but he got paid.

He did fail at running a football league though, he totally destroyed the USFL.

Maybe, but he's also a calculated liar. He made the calculation that it was in his best interest to tell the lie that he doesn't settle lawsuits. We know that he has settled lawsuits and so that's a lie.

He made the calculation that it was wise to come down hard on immigration while he himself has used illegal immigrant workers. I think that he calculates what's in his best interest and will say it even if it is a risk.

So the fact that he will say risky things doesn't mean that he's speaking from his gut, it simply means that the risk was worth taking for him. Or that he had the confidence he could pull it off.

It's a calculated risk - but that doesn't make it a safe risk either. He's willing to do whatever it takes to win, because there is no such thing as losing in his book. Nothing ventured nothing gained. He has nothing to lose here. He started with nothing. He didn't have a career in politics. He didn't invest his life being a state representative or whatever. He just crashed a party and he did it his way.

He KNOWS that he can get away with the stuff he says. He knows that somehow he won't be judged on the same level as a politician - because he isn't one. He can lie all he wants and contradict - his followers don't care. They don't think anyone else is honest and think at least Trump is one thing that no politician is: genuine. Trump knows this. He knows that all he has to do is express the people's frustration.

Think about his words. He says what the right feels. Ban Muslims. F immigrants. Throw the blacks out. Screw the rest of the world, we're america. He is America F Yeah. He's a cowboy. The real maverick that McCain never really lived up to. Trump is the definition of unapologetic, and that's why people love him. Because he represents the brand of America that many feel is being lost.

The way to beat him to to portray him as a loose cannon - reckless. Someone who will get us stuck in wars. Someone who will create problems. Someone who will get nothing done because he can't compromise and will divide the country even further. Just look at the way he is dividing republicans - imagine what he would do to this country!

That's ok. There aren't any moderate Republicans left.

Donald Trump doesn't "tell it like it is", the nonsense that he spouts is absolutely calculated. He says outlandish things that he thinks people want to hear but who knows how much, if any of it he actually believes. He's playing the Republican party for suckers.....and right now it's working.

atlantic city has boomed and busted for hundreds of years due to many different reasons none of which are casino gambling because it wasn't legal until the late 70s. the decline started in the 50s and 60s before casino gambling because the country and people moved from trains to planes and automobiles. now they could do day trips and not stay or worse fly to miami or some other place.

legalized casino gambling revitalized (trump big part of that) AC. actually was one of the biggest tourist destinations again in the 80s. but when big luxury money poured into vegas in the 90s and resevration casinos killed that revitalization. hurricane sandy and related sensationalized false media reports damn near finished AC off.

many people lost money in atlantic city for reasons none of them could control but don't let factual history get in the way of your bashing.

That's a little unfair. When the economy tanks, casinos really tank. Las Vegas was obliterated in 2009. Their unemployment was one of the worst in the US. The same goes for Atlantic City (who in also faced the growth of casinos in nearby states). AC only made sense in a world where it held a monopoly on casino gambling in the region. That's no longer true anymore so AC has slowly crumbled over time.

But casinos are totally boom and bust. With the amount of capital it takes to build a good casino, it turns into an incredibly dangerous investment.

I don't know what Trump Orgaz LLC is. Most LLC aren't personal and private and interact with others. No, I'm suggesting that personal and private isn't a big deal. LLC aren't usually that.

Unless you are thinking of having a sexual or romantic relationship with the person, I think it's not a big deal.

Trump was very successful in the NY real estate market 30 years ago, he was on the ground floor of rejuvenating the NY market.

Then he had the USFL failure, then the casino failures. Around that time he also lost his two top advisers and continued to struggle.

He then tried purchasing undeveloped land in Florida but failed to get the local government to give him the tax breaks he got in NY under Mayor Koch. So he failed to develop the land and ultimately turned down an offer in the late 90's of several hundred million dollars, later he sold it for twenty million dollars.

Then the old man died and he inherited two hundred million dollars. He invested wisely in several golf resorts, but nothing like the earlier years.

Over the years he has had a best selling book and figured out that he could sell his name to crappy products and make money with very little exposure.

Donald Trump had an amazing run of 4-5 years where he was "it" as a developer, he poured a bunch of money into NYC before it rebounded, got incredible leases and tax cuts from the city and sold the city of luxury, but it didn't last long.

Oh good, Trump finally walked back all of the stupid talk about torturing the families of terrorists. He was advocating for war crimes for the better part of a year, glad he finally realized exactly how stupid that rhetoric was.

I know him calling for war crimes for many many months won't hurt him with his moronic supporters and "changing his mind" on that, and damn near every position he's taken thus far won't hurt him with them either. They truly are the lowest form of life.

This stupid talk about Trump being a horrible business man because 1/4 of his businesses fail is hogwash. More than half of businesses fail PERIOD. Go ask Richard Branson how many of his businesses end up working out?

If you don't take risks you are not going to be successful in business and Donald takes risks.

Las Vegas was obliterated? Really? The only thing that was obliterated in Vegas in 2009 was the housing market. Working in Vegas casinos for 15 years until last year I can tell you Vegas casinos or Las Vegas in general was NOT obliterated.

I think Trump's most successful business is building and hyping his brand.

People pay him a lot to slap his name in hotels, buildings, products etc.
