What a horrible ending to everything. I don't condone his illegal activity, but it sounds like he was feeling pretty damn miserable about his chances in the system.

I'm with the folks who think it was suicide. It makes sense.

However, what a painful, painful way to go. A car accident and burning alive? No, thank you.

I got into a Twitter fight with his niece one time (you know her, dates a famous baseball player, Darren Rovell made an ass out of himself chatting with her on camera once, she's been on more Sports Illustrated covers than James Harden) because she went to a Thunder game with him courtside.

I asked her if she was aware if her uncle contributed millions to helping stop marriage equality, something that was rather incongruous considering her profession. She later deleted her tweets.

After his death on Wednesday, she tweeted a photo of herself riding a horse. Not exactly broken up about his suicide.

    Keep burning in hell, Aubrey.

Impact probably killed him first. Maybe he faked his death.

Geez man. Take it down a notch. You like your cheap energy? Aubrey had a lot to do with it.

Conspiracy. Didn't the guy from Enron mysteriously die before jail time? Don't believe this

Seems like fleeing to a third world country without an extradition treaty with the US would have been a better option. Did he not see the indictment coming?

The body can't even be identified because of the power of the fire.

We can't discount a possible Machiavelli here.

And Vince Foster, too. Very shoddy police investigating was what I recall. Here's a story about both Baxter/Enron and Foster.

agreed. don't believe for a second this guy's dead.

chesapeake was a client at my old landman firm job, they'd make trips to OKC frequently. this seems surreal because i watched reactions to this dude's legal troubles unfold little by little since 2012. even the hardcore boot-wearin' conservative oil guzzlers thought he was scum.

doesn't seem like the thunder organization's year...

The Hangout (and, I'm assuming, the D + D forum) is littered with people gleefully tossing out Darwin Awards or good riddances when other criminals move on, and I'm supposed to hold back because this guy owned part of an NBA team?

A team he connived an entire city out of.

McClendon also flirted with Houston as a potential moving spot for his energy company, by the by, in a bid to drive up the value of his company. Teased the area with job prospects before deciding to stay in OKC. Also, he liked it when people that were in love weren't allowed to be married.

Wasn't Bennett the big thief of the team?

    So, he's supposed to have:

    1. Found a patsy and murdered him to add to his rap sheet,
    2. Not only managed to get the patsy but somehow get his body in a high-speed car wreck and fire and make it look legit,
    3. Count on the fire destroying all the evidence of the body's identity so that investigators assume it's him -- even though dental and DNA evidence could eventually prove it's not him.

He'd only get one take at all of this. He'd have to execute well and still be lucky. The simpler answer is that he was guilty as charged but didn't want to face the consequences of his actions.

Very interesting. The cops would almost have to be involved for someone to pull this off

Nothing wrong with the anecdote. Plenty wrong with signing off wishing he burns in hell.
