Because a first round pick is better to have right now.

    Even DMo said this

Think of it this way if we face the Warriors, at least we will be losing to the best team of all time. Even if the Rockets were elite this year and made a top 2-3 seed, at some point in the Playoffs we would have ran into the buzzsaw Warriors and we would have gotten carved up. Might as well get it out of the way in the 1st round.

Before the season if your predictions for the Rockets were
    1. We would make the Playoffs
    2. We would lose to the Warriors again

You'd think that was a reasonable forecast.

And who knows, maybe James Harden turns into "I'm should've been MVP last year" mode and goes berserk on the Dubs. Maybe Beverley injures Curry. So many possibilities.

I don't agree that a mid first round pick is good for much other than 3 years down the road.

Put a stake in the ground, build around Harden, and go to war.

    Stop screwing about chasing maybes.

Morey was just hedging his bets DD. You know he is risk averse. I obviously didn't agree with the trade but I'm sucre statistically you could find a reason why it was a good one.

He will be paid what the market bares - that is not overpaid it is rightly paid.

Yeah but the market is gonna bare some crazy s### this offseason. There is a reason why the term "Market Correction" exists.

We are going to see some spectacularly wonky contracts offered. Get yr popcorn...

Then they should have extended DMo when they had the chance and not exposed him to RFA....should have learned their lesson from Parsons.

I agree with this. There's always a slight chance a mid-round or lowere rookie contributes right away like Parsons, Cuttino ... Kawhi, but a big is unlikely. Maybe a defensive specialist PF or three pt floor spreader slips thru. But usually your developed player will be better -- DMo

The way I think GMs value these picks is also in their tradeability. They are often keys for like getting Harden, even with a selected one like Lamb. You always have to consider that value as well

Yeah, getting a player in the mid-first round that can contribute better than the current DMo next season is not likely. (Let's put aside the injury issue here.) I am almost certain that the pick would have been a trade asset rather than a contributing player for Morey.

You do realize that they actually did negotiate to extend both him and Jones and both players didn't agree to terms right? Don't make me have to dig those reports out please.

At the time this Summer those deals Morey was trying to lock in probably look great for both players in comparison to what they will probably get now due to Jones' poor play & D-Mo's injury/Detroit situation, but at the time they had all the reason in the world to gamble on themselves in RFA this Summer with the cap explosion. Guys like Zach Lowe, etc. were reporting that even Jones could be looking at offers from 8 to 10 million a year. D-Mo was probably projected to get much more if healthy.

There is no reason to blame Morey for NOT extending D-Mo or Jones unless you just want to blame Morey to blame Morey which is probably the case here.

In all actuality, it will probably work out better for Morey that he did NOT get an extension worked out with either at least from the team's perspective. Not sure the reason for arguing this other than looking for more reasons to b**** about Morey.

DMo is a big maybe that you want to chase, or do you not see his back issues as a long term concern?

Parsons who signed a huge contract, got hurt/microfracture surgery, flailed at all of his "offseason recruiting mode" hype in Dallas, and who the Rockets improved without last year when swapping him out for a cheaper defense-oriented player?

    Good lesson!

    You can't be serious.

    They tried to resign him.

Also Parsons hasn't been a good signing by the Mavs thus far.

Parsons is a good example of why you shouldn't overpay role players
