    What is Person 1's sex?
Asked since 1790. Census data about sex are important because many federal programs must differentiate between males and females for funding, implementing and evaluating their programs. For instance, laws promoting equal employment opportunity for women require census data on sex. Also, sociologists, economists, and other researchers who analyze social and economic trends use the data.

Based on the above, yes. Social trend is important to understand. Could also be used to target at risk group for additional help / education.

    No. Wtf.

Gay people are regular people like you and me who happen to be attracted to somebody of the same gender. It isn't about race/ethnicity/religion, it is about whom they are naturally attracted to.

I am a male attracted to thick big booty girls. Should I have to report that?

The census should be reserved for life's important questions. For instance, Ginger or Mary Ann?

Not only should this not be asked, but the census should be pared back to a simple count of the citizens, as was intended. They can collect names and social security numbers to make sure no one is counted twice, but that should be sufficient.

You're not required to answer any questions except for how many people live in your house.

Of course you're knit-picking, as always. You're the same guy who freaked out when I said churches had started commenting more on homosexuality in response to increased activism from gays: because you never heard it in your individual congregation, which you then claimed was analogous for all Catholic congregations and all of Christianity as a whole. In between incessantly mentioning you went to Rice every three seconds, just whiny b****ing all around.

Yes. Issues dealing with sexual orientation always are colored with a lack of knowledge about how many people have what sort of sexual orientation. I think as a voluntary anonymous question including that in the census would help clarify the make up of the population.

Race and gender have been asked since 1790

No they shouldnt ask for name and SSN. They prevent double counting by address. Not perfect, but anonymity is important. Also makes it much easier to collect, since only one person in the household need answer, without having to know all SSNs

I find it interesting that some seem somewhat offended that the question is even asked on this BBS

I must admit I have an curiosity about the numbers
Is the number consistent? Does it grow?
I would think from a scientific perspective It would be helpful in understanding
    growth rates, location, etc.

It was not the intent . . . to offend

In the same vein, wouldn't other questions be helpful in understanding growth rates, location, etc. For example, How many people at this address have cancer. How many people at this address are obese. How many people at this address drink 2+ drinks a day.

Sorry, but fatties would explode if you tried this. Seems like we already have pretty good data without. I mean I support it just for the lulz.
