So what's Christie's endgame after selling his soul to the Donald? Attorney General? That's it?

The risk outweighs the reward. Becoming the first major endorsement for Trump of any kind while also stealing the news cycle away from Rubio after his strong debate performance is perhaps political genius by Trump, but it exposes Christie to a huge backlash if Trump doesn't win the presidency. The GOP is a scornful bunch. It never forgets. The RNC would make sure Christie's political career is destroyed.

 

Not really, he has nothing to lose. He's hit term limits as Governor of New Jersey and isn't popular enough to continue in politics as a Senator or Representative. Groveling at Trump's feet is pretty much his only option with any upside.

 

Republicans could have put a ticket together of Marco Rubio/ Nikki Haley or John Kasich/ Susana Martinez or some other combination of electable GOP candidates (Scott, Sandoval, Ryan, etc.). These people could have cut into Democrats' demo- and geographic advantages. Yet, Donald Trump is marching towards the nomination and a general election disaster.

I guess this will be Reince's last year running the party.

 

Agreed... a Rubio / Haley or Rubio / Martinez ticket (or for that matter Blumenthal / Martinez or Ryan / Martinez) would get my consideration.

That's what they don't get, "they" don't get to decide anything. They fed their base a crazy town cocktail for decades. They purged everybody moderate

You don't get to say "hey guys now choose the tan messengers cause that will work out better for us" The message is the issue.

Still can, but unfortunately we have to trust that the people will do the right thing and let's face it, they aren't trustworthy.

 

You wonder if moderate Republicans will ever get sufficiently pissed to the point of mobilizing and pulling the party back to the center. I kind of doubt it; I imagine most of them are doing better financially than your typical tea party type, and it would be easier for any true social liberal/fiscal conservative types to just switch teams.

 

The problem is the "modrates" actually, that's Trump's base. No actual conservative would be caught dead supporting Trump, that's why it's guys like Christie out there fellating Trump.

 

I wasn't aware that the Tea Party movement represented the moderate wing of the Republican Party.

 

Cruz and Rubio are "tea party" guys, Trump is a joke only supported by "moderates" like the Governor of Jersey Shore. Now sure these "moderates" have some extreme and stupid ideas, but they are absolutely not conservative.

 

Just because you don't like them and think that they're stupid doesn't mean they don't share many of your beliefs. I get that this is a defense mechanism, but it's looking sillier and sillier by the day.

 

It's not that I disagree with them that makes them not conservative, it's their beliefs that make them not conservative. Look at the main issue for the Jersey Shore Governor, his #1 issue is that he wants to expand government to interfere in people's private lives more be it by warrant-less wiretaps or throwing people in jail for smoking weed in states that have legalized it. That's not something that a real conservative would do. The problem is that there are plenty of people that call themselves conservatives that simply aren't when you look at their policy stances and I think that's what might be fooling you on this point. Anyone that would fit into the category of the so called "religious right" aren't truly conservative, they can't be based on their beliefs that call for more government intervention and government sanctions in people's private lives. No true conservative could be against gay marriage. There are tons of issues where people in the Republican party betray true conservative ideals and what you end up with is a war between conservatives that are true to their ideals and Republicans.
