Doesn't work that way. The player needs to be at the end of a multi-year deal of at least three years. A team can't get Bird rights in one year, precisely to prevent that sort of thing.
lets not forget adding the "wink wink" deal for Parsons to become a RFA a year earlier that ended up with Parsons leaving to Dallas. Granted Parsons had a HUGE hand in the whole ordeal, but Fegan pushed that through. It was pretty obvious when Daryl said sometimes things are not as simple as black and white when dealing with players and situations. Granted it worked out for the Rockets luckily but having Parsons on the team for another year for under 1M would have been super beneficial for the team in terms of versatility and chemistry. We could have still had Ariza too. I dont know if firing Fegan means Dwight is willing to take a significant amount less than the max deal he can receive next year. BUT I do believe it means Dwight is willing to work with the Rockets moreso than before. IF IF IF the Rockets are able to swing a situation where another max player (if not the major one but another one) and pair him up with James and Dwight it would be huge. I think even Dwight knows he is still more than a capable player and an all-star but probably has a very small window for winning a ring and I think winning means a lot more to him right now than getting a 20M deal vs a 30M deal
Actually it does work that way. I believe you are mistaken. The deal for bird rights is 3 consecutive seasons for a team without being waived or changing teams via free agency. Dwight already qualifies, and a 1 yr deal does not change that since he isn't changing teams...
Isn't there a max salary raise a player can get from their last contract? Bimathug can we get the real answer on this? But with Howards health, he'd be a fool to sign a one year deal, so I guess the question doesn't matter anyways.

As far as Dwight gaining "more" respect, I've always liked him as a player and if he does us a solid and resigns for a "fair" deal, then I'll like him even more! Charles Barkley actually did this exact thing. He signed a 1 year minimum deal so that the Rockets would have cap room for Pippen. The Rockets retained their Bird Rights and exceeded the cap to resign Barkley the following season.
No, there's no max between contracts. Hence Chandler Parson's going from $900K to a max deal. You might be thinking about the max raises between seasons of a single contract. Those raises are capped.
As happy as I am that Dwight is no longer with Fegan, I have to say that Fegan does his job as an agent...He is extremely intelligent and always gets his clients a great contract. But as big name stars in their primes left, Fegan has to be wonder if his appeal has collapsed. Only Cousins(maybe Butler) remain as his big name prize(s).

I remember reading on the lakers forum from one of their insiders (confirmed as long time friend of jerry buss) that he was in the room when dwight's agent gave his word dwight would re-sign prior to the 2012-13 season during that whole trade fiasco.
