The Republican party is in the process of killing themselves. I don't think they are going to listen to reason and change course. The only thing rational Republicans can do is abandon the party and vote Hillary or not at all. Moderates and non-Republicans who may have considered voting Republican should do the same. If Trump is what the Republicans are going to allow to represent them then the death of that party is for the best.
Just to be clear, the 1% that are GOP do NOT want to deport all the illegals or even really build a wall. They've just fostered the illegal immigrant boogeyman as a way to herd the cats that comprise the base they are relying on behind one singular issue. They may not be able to stir up emotions to defend the carried interest deduction, but stirring them up behind an immigration platform is easy. The goal (of both parties in my mind) was never to SOLVE immigration, just to keep fighting over it to stir up their bases. The problem is that the conservative side has moved so far into the fear mongering that they are about to nominate a super radical nationalist who is going to end any hope of conservatives getting the hispanic vote for a generation. The party leaders never wanted the conversation to end up here. The hope was to keep using it but to offer somewhat middle of the road solutions so they could keep getting enough hispanics to maybe win without ever promising to solve anything.
1% could care less about any of that. In fact, I would argue they would adamantly oppose all illegals being deported because then the illusion they have created that illegals are causing all of our problems would collapse, and the corrupted system of wealth funnelling to the rich would be exposed.
Wouldn't anti-imm Republicans have a better argument if they centered their anger against the "1%" and businesses that hired illegal immigrants? Seems like it would be more efficient to heavily punish the businesses that hired these people than to build giant walls or track them all down and deport them. Would the "poorly educated" white working class understand this though? Easier to stoke their fears of the others, I guess.
That's the ultimate case of biting the hand that feeds you. The GOP wouldn't have their coffers of cash without the 1% donating to their midterm and presidential elections. Big Business went to bed with dogs (uneducated, anti-immigrant, religous) with the hopes they would help carry their candidates into office and now they are waking up with fleas.
Props to Mitt Romney for jumping in and trying to derail the Trump lunacy Presidential bid. Respect him for that. We'll see if more establishment guys speak out forcefully.
If there's one thing Trump can do it's bring the Right and Left together against him. He'll unite everyone in opposition to him.
