Yeah, I'm not expecting to like it. But I'm not going to disparage his music as a whole because I don't really like the direction he's gone recently. Most rappers only make one good album. If they're lucky...maybe two. Heck, most rappers barely even make more than 2 albums period...good or not. The fact that he's had (at minimum) 4 classic rap albums and is still relevant after 15 years as a solo artist is pretty unique. There is really no precedent in rap music for an artist to have that much critical success and commercial success over a longer period of time.
What music do you listen to that makes you say that. I listen to greats of rock from the 60s 70s 80s 90s 00s 10s I listen to electronic and dance music I listen to hip hop And I have to say electronic and hip hop music are just as important as jazz and rock. It doesn't matter if you only sample it doesn't take away from from you artistry. If anything it shows you can compose music. And know a thing or two about song structure. And not only that but 808s and heartbreak shows kanye making original music while covering a song by tears for fears. I can name some other sampling geniuses that will hopefully change your mind about sampling. Burial Dj shadow Pete rock Moby J dilla Rza And to those saying "hip hop isn't music" let me teach you something about hip hop. Hip hop gets its origins from r&b, punk and electronic music now I'm going to simplify it but this is how it goes Blues> rock> punk> hip hop = the attitude Blues > soul> r&b > hip hop = the inspiration Disco> Dance> electronic >hip hop = the instrumental So the music you love to hate should actually be something you admire
Do you agree that he's one of the most critically acclaimed artists of All time. Not to mention one of the most successful. Not to mention one of the most influential. Not to mention garners immense respect from his peers, both in rap AND in other genres of music?
wu tang's 36 chambers! kanye's new album was a fun and good listen but this goat stuff has got to stop.
I watched SNL to see him strictly because of this thread. Went in with a completely open mind and I was really hoping I'd like it. WTF was that autotune tripe? I thought you guys said he could rap AND sing? Should I listen to a few of his albums on YouTube or something? Because, based on that performance, I'm just not getting it. It was seriously AWFUL.
College drop and late registration if you're into hip hop soul sampling Graduation if you're into happy synth hip hop with some soul samples 808s if you're into new wave and pop with tribal drums My beautiful dark twisted fantasy if you're into baroque pop, psychedelic and progressive rock sampling Watch the Throne is using dark fantasy's maximalism and making a fun pop record Yeezus if you're into electronic, industrial and punk music The Life of pablo a pop version of yeezus but with gospel and soul mixed in there
Great post! Pretty much sums it up. I'm an old school Kanye Fan. I can tell you I haven't liked much of anything he's done in the past 4-5 years. This album I really don't care for. I'll listen to a few tracks and say cool but the replay value isn't there. He is very overrated & thinks too highly of himself.
beastie boys did his act almost 30 years ago. yes i think making rap(hip hop) music is by far the easiest genre of music to make and break into. all you have to do is have a look, have the right friends, or live in the right areas. also the lack of vocal or instrument talent makes the learning curve much faster. while most successful musicians slog away perfecting their talents with hours and hours of playing, now you take somebody else's compositions and let the computer do all the work. all you need is an ear to make sure it sounds good. okay so kanye has a good ear. this is the genre that has hits from lil jon, lil b, riff raff, pitbull, vanilla ice, gucci mane, etc... mane who unfortunately is in prison like so many in this genre. actually, many records and hits have been written in prison or on a prison phone i guess YES!!! it's so easy that you can do it from prison!!! he's the best at hype and marketing. he's the floyd mayweather of hip hop. the undefeated of his generation but historically the weakest of the greats. also i think he has good ideas but isn't smart enough to articulate them. he's like dre beats. **** hardware and performance but kiddies by that $200+ garbage like crack. sorry but kanye is emotionally and lyrically lowbrow. he is great at creating controversy and marketing. and again, he isn't ground breaking ****, the beastie boys did the same ****e 30 years ago. yup, like i said floyd mayweather. except mayweather does have elite defensive skills. that said he still is the greatest, marketing hype, calculating, paper champion of all time. my bad. i also feel terrible for leaving out ludarcis. to me the most underrated in the genre. gets overlooked because he is southern and most southern rappers can't rhyme anything more complex than 1-2 buckle my shoe. kayne is a talented producer and has a very decent ear for what sounds good. he is a hype machine, controversy generating, master marketer. Of course i say all this (my opinion) and labeled a hater. i get it, kanye is a phenomenon. but because of this his hardcore fans can't be objective. I'll leave y'all with joke i wrote. what do you call a rapper with no flow and no skill as a writer? Spoiler kanye west
I would not recommend Yeezus for someone who is trying to get an intro to Kanye. For instance, Kanye is probably my favorite rap artist ever, and I don't even like Yeezus. I would actually just recommend going in sequence. The first three albums are pretty similar and a purer form of rap, so I would start there.
I need to start reading the music posts on this forum. Some of you guys have amazing takes with great points!
i liked it. not the greatest album of all times or whatever lol but its good. what i like the most about kanye is he always brings an interesting sound. his album sounds like no other album out right now. its different and that i can appreciate.
If it's so easy then why isn't there a rza, Chuck d, Dr dre, kanye, Kendrick, drake , Mf doom, jay z, mos Def, killer Mike, el-p, nas, outkast, J dilla, ghostface, rakim, danny Brown, raekwon, ugk, nwa, and dozens of other legends popping up every weekend and then making a legacy for them themselves. You seem to look at rap from the surface. if you're referencing beasties boys and trying to use that to discredit kanye then you failed because you are just proving that kanye is doing what they were doing which was greatness. I honestly feel like you stopped looking for rap music 15 years ago. Because the only artist you referenced are artist that no real music fan was looking out for. Lil jon, lil b, and vanilla ice really. There will always be artist in genres that exploit the genre to make a quick buck. So there goes your counter. Don't try and attack a genre that you seem to barely know anything about. Come back to us with actual logic on the genre.
I am not a Swift fan but I liked he she subtly called him out at the Grammys without mentioning Kanye's name
