Not really. Obama has 9 months to nominate a new Justice. The last few months have shown that he has finally started to exert himself.
Well if he wants to get a justice through congress it'll require actual compromise with Republicans, something he's been unwilling to do throughout his presidency. If not, they'll run the clock out on him and the next president will name the new justice.
Exactly -- he helped a true idol of yours in a time of need, and he is disliked by unions. Looks like you would line up with this one, while librulz wring their pathetic hands. Remind me if Ted Cruz voted to confirm him or not (?). It was 97-0.
Another tidbit of history - from looking at a Wikipedia list of SC Justices, I believe these justices were appointed (or began their tenure) during the final full year of a president (not counting those presidents who vacated office early). Anthony Kennedy Benjamin Cardozo Mahlon Pitney George Shiras Rufus Peckham Lucius Lamar John Harlan Phillip Barbour AND .......(drum roll) The following justices were appointed (and/or began their tenure) in the actual final calendar year of a President. Howell Jackson William Woods Samuel Nelson John Catron So there is no precedent for delaying a nomination in order to allow the next president to choose it. Note - there may be more, but I got tired of looking....
A great nominee, both politically and juridically would be Richard Poster. Watching the GOP clowns block him would be amazing and sad.
lol Obama going full beta moving into his lecture mode, saying the Senate should fulfill their responsibility and that they have plenty of time, knowing he has no prayer since he's unwilling to work across the aisle.
So is Congress - this one led by the GOP has explicitly stated that it will not. Clowns - the whole lot of them
Ah yes, I can see it now.... (dream music, wavy screen) O: I'd like to talk about possible candidates for the open seat on... GOP: No. O: How about you just shake your head at each name you hate? GOP: No. Assume all heads shaking at any possible name. O: The animated corpse of Scalia? GOP: No. Not funny, by the way. O: I will nominate Clarence Thomas. GOP: No! Wait, what? O: I want him to finally participate on the SCOTUS. GOP: Okay, we LOLed a little but still NO. NO to everything.
And not going along with the president is what most of them got elected on. Not letting the president push through a liberal justice to replace the most conservative justice and pushing the SCOTUS to the left is something that will help them get re-elected and will help get the vote out for Republicans in the presidential election. The best thing the president can do for himself is nominate a moderate conservative, it's pretty much the only hope of getting past congress and making it a non-issue in the presidential campaign.
Yeah, that's pretty much a compromise. When you have only a short time left as president and you can't get anything done without the approval of Republicans, you have to find someone that they would find acceptable. Elections have consequences and Obama got a ton of Republicans elected.....now he has to deal with it.
Obama has time to go through two separate nominations. This is going to be politically disastrous for Republicans.
I just find its fitting and funny for you to clearly state what compromise is to you. Obama needs to be a Republican. If not, its his fault. Lol.
Wow... Scalia's body wasn't even cold yet and Republicans were already announcing they would block any nomination. SMH...
