Yes, he is noticeably chunky in recent photographs - this is surprising to you I guess.

The point that Yao remaining at the same weight he was at age 20 was never going to happen, that the narrative that he was going to shoot three pointers and thread needle passes like a 7-6 Asian Magic Johnson until Van Gundy ruined him by, good lord, forcing him to play close to the basket and use his size, is a laughable narrative of the same vintage as the world where Jeremy Lin was a future superstar whose game was ruined by McHale.

A world that is not this one.

who said yao was to become an asian magic johnson? who said jvg "ruined" him? jvg helped him to become who he became. lol. reminds me the silly thread "if mchale ruined kames harden".

i've always felt yao couldve been better utilized, and that wouldve ultimately benefitted the team. just my opinion.

and if yao has got chunky after he's retired from bball for yrs., i guess that's a big surprise only to you. like meanwhile shaq and barkley at tnt have stayed the same weight or body shape. lol.

And you are still pretty much clocking in at Michael Olowkandi level in terms of meaningful insights.

in a way, this is,,, true.

glad to know i am not alone feeling this way.

turning him into a ewing isnt a bad thing in itself. it's just... maybe it couldve been diff.,,, and better...

    and your insights are 2:

    1) yao has got chunky lately,,, after he retired.

    2) and that's because genetics.

Hakeem change the game . . . Yao was doing the same

the JVG Center cannot work in this league today. Dwight is Exhibit A

Yao is the center of NOW . . only back then

As long as I like JVG as a coach, Dirk would never win a NBA title if JVG was the Mavs coach. JVG would ask Dirk go inside more rather than outside.

Ahahaha, yes if anything abut the Pace and Space era of the NBA has taught us, it's that a plodding 300 lb center with hands of stone and the reaction time of a sundial is THE CENTER OF NOW....just like when MVP Mozgov dominated the Warriors last may.

    Never change bro, never change.

He looks like what Shaq said initially '7'9/10" in that pic.

Uh....people who posted on the board during Yao Ming's playing career?

A group that effectively does not include you..unless you count his brief 2011 cameo.

Sam didn't like Yao. Sam hated YOFs even more.
Anyways, in the earlier days Yao could be taken out by fronting. We had ton of troubles playing against small ball team. Nejara and Al Harrington had more success guarding Yao than DH and Shaq. Yao killed opposing bigs, not even a contest, but was killed by Boozer. :)

That said, look at those post moves and his feel at the post. It's a lost art.

To me Yao's best in his rookie year:
    (1) Best move - Shanghai shake and scored on the 3 all stars Brad Miller, Artest and O'Neal
    (2) Best game - having 27/18/3 against the twin towers, Duncan and Robinson
    (3) Best Dunk - on Theo Ratlift and *beep*
    (4) Best Block -Consecutive blocks on Shaq
    (5) Best assist - Over the head passed to Moocie Norris.

Throughout Yao's career, only Steve Francis ever attempted to throw alley-oop to Yao.
