Dirty Grandpa 7/10 which is pretty high for a comedy like this. The whole time you just keep thinking "I can't believe they got Robert De Niro to do that!!!"
Watched the pinnacle of 90's movies that is 'Hackers'. Would watch repeatedly for the next 20 years. Rating: Crash Override/10
Prisoners 10/10 Was totally unexpected at how crazy amazing this movie was. Had me at my feet the entire way. If you haven't seen it, watch it!
The Big Short 8.5/10 Watch this movie and you will finally come to understand exactly what caused The Great Crash of 2008. The film has terrific acting to go along with a marvelous cast and a great script. It is also, surprisingly, very funny at times. Go see it!
Searching for the Sugar Man is just about the best documentary I've ever watched. Just incredible. Recommend it to anyone who follows any part of the music industry, or alternately anyone who has a heart.
Saw pletnty of westerns recently. Revenant 9.5/10 great movie, acting and outstanding visuals. Hateful Eight 9/10 I'm a Tarentino fan and it's was a satisfying watch. Bone Tomahawk 8.5/10 Seemed a little slow at first, but was definitely worth it once things get rolling. Star Wars Force Awakens 9/10 I was very happy with the new star wars. Had a lot of already used plot themes, but it was a successful return for things fans loved about the original trilogy.
The Liberator (it's on netflix) 9/10 but maybe I just love freedom fights. Cool true story about fighting for freedom. It was a revolution based out of Venezuela not too long after the American Revolution. Worth a watch if you like freedom fights.
Deadpool - 10/10 Hail, Caesar! - 5/10 Scarlett Johansson in a swim suit was worth the price of admission, but for the life of me there is not much of plot here. A day in the life at a 1950s Hollywood studio. Great visuals but thin characterizations. But Scarlett Johansson in a swim suit!
The Witch - 9/10 Reeeeeeeeally enjoyed this. Might be too slow of a build up for some with horror, but I thought it was awesome.
Long story short- and mentioned in another thread- stuck in a hotel for 2 days with only 1 channel working- AMC. So, these was my choices (because they repeat a lot), 2 shows and 4 movies repeated on a loop: The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, and 3:10 to Yuma, King Kong, The Green Mile, and El Dorado. Gotta say, 3:10 to Yuma and The Green Mile were outstanding- never saw either before. If you get a chance, definitely see both.
I saw your post and went to check this out when I realized I'd already seen it. Simon Bolivar led quite a life. Good movie.
Sadly, the filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul took his own life less than 2 years after the film was released. Sixto has been on the major festival tour ever since the film was released across America and worldwide. Glad to see him have some recognition and success even if much later in his life.
Judgement at Nuremberg (1961) 9 out of 10 I caught this tonight on Turner Classic Movies. Extremely well done courtroom drama highlighting a fictional trial of German judges who were on trial for being part of the judicial system while the Nazis were in power in Germany. Apart from the star power (Burt Lancaster, Spencer Tracy, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, Richard Widmark, Maximilian Schell, Montgomery Clift, William Shatner) the performances and script were excellent and proper for a story that requires soberness and understatement. It was really interesting watching the events unfold through the pressures of the time. At the time these 2nd tier Nazi prosecutions were taking place, it was fully a 1-2 year period after the high profile prosecutions of people like Goring, Hess, Jodl, Speer, Donitz, et al had been completed. At that point, the world had moved on and the United States and western Europe were dealing with an aggressive Stalin and the USSR. Fears of a hot war were rampant with things like the Berlin Airlift happening. Convictions of lower level Germans angered the German people at exactly the time the American government needed them to ally with NATO against the looming Soviet threat. I see now why it attained 11 Oscar nominations and 2 wins. Highly recommended.
Yeah, that scene with the electrocution where he didn't wet the sponge? Wow. And I've seen 3:10 to Yuma 3 times today, so now it's in my head. Christian Bale as a somewhat weak individual is something to see.
After a string of incredibly disappointing movies (*cough*The Martian*cough*), I finally had a good streak: Straight Outta Compton - 7/10 - A good but not great film. Certainly worth seeing. Bridge of Spies - 8/10 - I enjoyed this one quite a bit. Tom Hanks with Spielberg is normally a good combination. Spotlight 8.5/10 - This one might be the best picture winner, although I haven't seen the Big Short yet. Creed - 7/10 - It was a good effort with a few cheesy scenes that dropped the score a bit. I thought the way they did the first few fights was really interesting.
