HOUSTON – The Washington Wizards added another impressive road win to their lengthy list of impressive wins away from Verizon Center with a 123-122 victory over the Houston Rockets Saturday night and they did it without Nene’s services for the final eight minutes because one of the referees’ several questionable decisions on the night.

Play was halted with 8:08 left and the Wizards leading 102-98 when Nene and Rockets center Dwight Howard engaged in a brief skirmish. Each player was assessed a technical foul and since Howard had already been issued a technical foul in the second quarter he was ejected. But Nene, to his and the Wizards’ surprise, was also ejected moments later when he was assessed a second technical foul after the referees reviewed the episode.

“I don’t know about that,” said Nene, who posted 10 points in 19 minutes off the bench after starting the previous four games. “I don’t understand it. Nobody figured out what happened, even then.”

Said Wizards forward Jared Dudley: “I don’t know how Nene got two techs. I’ve never seen that. Maybe he got a double tech or whatever. But they gave him two and I think that was probably a make-up call after giving Dwight one. Either way, we’ll take it. I wanted Dwight out of the game anyway. It was easier for us. “

Referee John Goble explained the officials’ reasoning after the game.

“The rulings on Nene and Howard were Nene was initially issued his first technical foul for wrapping Howard in the upper torso area,” Goble said. “Howard was then issued a technical foul for pushing Nene. Nene was then issued a second technical foul for continuing to taunt Howard after that.”

The sequence was the product of escalating physicality and verbal exchanges. Howard, who was also ejected Friday against the Oklahoma City Thunder, was given a technical foul in the second quarter for simulating a foul Jared Dudley committed on him to a referee, arguing that Dudley deserved more than a common foul. Dudley was ultimately given a flagrant-one foul but Howard was also disciplined for his demonstration.

Then a couple minutes before they were ejected, Nene and Howard got tangled up. With 10:42 left, Nene fouled Howard hard as he made a layup, arguing to a referee that Howard had held his arm down. James Harden, who went 10-for-10 from the free-throw line and finished with 40 points, was given a free throw for Nene’s second technical foul (one was offset by Howard’s technical foul) and made it to spark a 15-5 Rockets spurt that vaulted them to a 113-107 lead.

“When you have two big dudes, of course it’s going to be physical,” Nene said. “But dirty players are different. When you play dirty, you got to treat him a different way.”

Nene is the Wizards’ most physical rotation player and he made it a point to get physical with Howard after he posted 13 of his 20 points in the first quarter. Rockets Coach J.B. Bickerstaff, however, though Nene, like a lot of big men around the league, crossed the line defending Howard and lambasted the league’s referees.

“It’s not fair the way the referees ref Dwight,” Bickerstaff told reporters, via ESPN.com. “You can go back and look at clip after clip after clip — they initiate contact with him, they grab him, they hold him. Dwight gets punished more than anybody in the league. The referees need to be held accountable. They want to keep the game clean; the referees need to do their job from the beginning of the night. Over and over again, the same situation happens. At some point in time you want to protect the league’s players on a night-in and night-out basis, this crew is no exception.

“They didn’t protect Dwight. They allowed people to hit him, they allowed people to grab his neck, grab his arms, and hold his shoulders. He’s going to get hurt, plain and simple. The reason why he has the back problems and knee problems is because people jump on his back and grab on his shoulders; these referees need to be held accountable for letting people attack Dwight and be that physical with him. And dirty, it’s not physical; if they let Dwight be physical and be clean, that’s one thing. They’re not clean with the way they play. We don’t mind being physical; he’s not afraid of that. But cheap is one thing; grabbing somebody’s shoulders, grabbing somebody’s arms — that’s not clean basketball. And it’s not just tonight, but tonight is an example of it.”

Bickerstaff earned his own technical foul for crossing the midcourt line to call a timeout later in the fourth quarter. Bickerstaff voiced further criticism of the referees for the call.

“I called timeout 46 times,” Bickerstaff said. “Standing there, [the referee] acknowledged that he saw me but he didn’t blow his whistle. They called the timeout after they called the travel. To bail [the other official] out, he said he called a timeout. Those are plays that can’t be missed. It’s a one-point game. They win the game by one point on that technical foul because they weren’t in position to make the call.”

The second-guessing of the officials went right down to the last possession when Harden badly missed a layup. Dudley later admitted fouling Harden when he came over to help on the drive.

I blame the refs for letting that type of stuff go on under the hoop, but Howard just isn't mentally strong enough to let it go.

So...allegedly Dwight's camp called up some folks in the Commissioner's office to review NeNe's actions on the court.

This just came from a text from Ne's side.

Interesting. I know it was testy, but I thought it was over, especially considering the past.

I wonder if anything will come from it.

I guess we'll hear something, if there's anything else.

They are cool off of the court, so this is surprising.

They have always had some fierce competitions, but I think both will cool down.

It's a physical game, no matter who you play for.

It's like the man is allowed to get beat up in every way. It's dirty that the league wants to treat Dwight like this.

i wonder if dwight is really being singled out here, considering that demarcus gets brutalized by the refs as well. is it just that the league is actively pushing the game away from dominant big men?

Wonder how much of a monkey wrench this whole business turned out to be, as far as Maybiner Nenê Hilário being a Rocket.

Or was it just Jared Dudley?

D12 keeps committing the same ish, just shut up and dominate. If you keep scoring and blocking shots, the refs will change their attitudes. How about cussing your teammates out when they throw you bounce passes instead of alleyoops where they can't grab your arms. Better yet, develop a 10 ft jump shot to eaze the pain of having to score every point with your back to the basket (another reason why he's not worth $20 mln plus).
