I don't really trust BOB's ability to analyze QB talent after the Hoyer disaster so I wouldn't trust his advice as to which QB to trade up for. Given the class, I say either stay put at the pick you are at, or trade up to no higher than 15 at the most. There's just no reason in this QB class to trade up more than that for a QB that is likely to suck anyway.
It doesn't bother me. The Texans didn't exactly have their choice of QBs, in FA or the draft. People act as if OB tabbed Hoyer to be the future of the franchise when that wasn't remotely the case. Was he good? No, he was just OK. But it's not like any other options were good either. So I don't see the point of complaining about his choice of Hoyer. If we'd kept Fitz, people would be complaining about Fitz (as they did last year). If we'd signed Josh McCown, people would've been complaining about him. It's not like OB chose Hoyer over Rogers or Brady or Winston or Mariota. It's like blaming a guy for not dating a 10 when all the single women are 4's. To me, that doesn't disqualify OB from tabbing someone to be the franchise QB when presented with options of players actually capable of becoming franchise QBs.
Even tabbing him to be the QB for a single game shows that he's not very good at judging QB talent. We picked up multiple street FA's during the season that were better than him, BOB chose to go into a season with unacceptably poor QB's. The Texans could have EASILY had a better QB situation and perhaps advanced further in the playoffs, but they trusted BOB. Can't afford to do that again and certainly can't afford to waste a lot of draft picks to get a QB he suggests.
It's one thing to go for journeymen like Fitz and Hoyer who can do OK in thr regular season (they both blew up when it counted.) It's another thing to get a guy with worse stats than Tebow and VY and can't even use an alarm clock. And to be super high on him
Holding out and waiting until the 4th preseason game is over in 2014 because they were only willing to give up a 7th round pick doesn't sound like he was super high on him.
Yeah, the guy he was super high on was Hoyer and that was disastrous. Had Hoyer stayed healthy all year, the Texans don't make the playoffs and the fanbase wants BOB on the hot seat right now. Fortunately for the team and BOB, Hoyer got hurt twice so that street FA's could come in and do a better job than Hoyer was capable of and get the Texans into the playoffs. Last year was a total mess due to BOB's QB talent evaluation, there's no reason to trust it now when it comes to wasting a lot of picks to trade up for one.
and who picked this guy from the streets? not sure I understand what you are saying: the only choice at that time was Hoyer (you mean to tell me you would have went with Weeden in the playoffs)? Im more impressive the way Obrien coached this guys to win some games (Weeden had lost like every game he played for the cowboys) he comes in a Obrien has him playing a pretty solid game ) Why not give him some credit there?
The point here is that 2 street FA's were picked up that were better than the QB this guy chose to start the season with. Congratulations that we picked up garbage from the top of the heap that was better when the guy BOB chose to start the season with got hurt.....but why not just start out with better? As to Weeden, he absolutely sucks at football, but he's also better than Hoyer.....as is damn near everyone that played QB on a football roster in the NFL last season. Would the Texans have won with Weeden? Probably not, but the score would have likely been a lot closer and he'd have given the team a chance. They didn't have a chance with Hoyer.....the guy that BOB targeted and brought in specifically to start despite the fact that he moved on from 2 QB's in Keenum and Fitz who were better than him (though still pretty terrible) just to get him. That's just unacceptable and as a result I don't think you can take his opinion seriously when evaluating QB's. Maybe you give him some input, but you can't trust his judgement enough to give anything up to get another one of his guys. If they fall to the Texans, pick them up and let BOB lose his job by drafting them, but don't give a ton up just to do that so you can keep your job when BOB screws up again.
That's not even true. You only think that because 1) you hate Hoyer, and 2) they didn't play enough to fail and have people turn on them. Yates didn't even complete half of his passes. Weeden had to split time with an option QB who'd never thrown an NFL pass before. And the reigns were on those guys super tight. We ran the ball significantly more in the 3 games those guys started. Try rolling with those guys for a season and I don't think they're going to be as good as Hoyer was, playoff game excluded. Mallett looked pretty good in his one game last year (excusing the next game because of the torn pec), but that isolated success didn't really translate when he got extended playing time. Such would be the case for Yates (who didn't look that good anyway) or Wheeden.
Maybe but he not only benched Hoyer for him, he also benched Fitz for him. He clearly "believed" in him. And the whole thing about how Houston should appreciate that we have good QBs. This is after years of watching Mallet throw dirt bullets up close. We're talking about a guy who can't even put up a 70 QBrating or 6 y/a. Also I'm tired of this regime wasting picks. It adds up. One wasted seventh rounder, OK. Ten random wasted picks? Not OK Oh yeah and he gave Mallet a raise too
Not exactly true. Technically they could have had Bortles or Carr or Garoppolo without having to trade a single pick (I still like the Clowney pick and still have hope for XSF). They kicked the can down the road on the qb position and now may have to overpay to move up in the draft.
Hoyer was clearly the best of our crappy QBs. Put up a 90 QBrating and several games against .500 teams or better But was he actually good? No
Not saying he was good. I just don't think there was necessarily a better option last year. And even if you want to quibble about Josh McCown or keeping Fitz, it's not like those guys are franchise QBs either. So I don't buy the argument that Hoyer being our QB is proof that OB can't be trusted with evaluating talent at the position. It's not like we passed up some superstar to roll with Hoyer instead. Hoyer was cheap. Mallett was cheap. Both knew the system. There wasn't really anyone else better available. I can't rationally fault the Texans from a personnel standpoint. The benching of Hoyer in the first game was BS though.
The facts are BOB has only drafted and developed one QB which is Savage. No one knows what he looks like because he got hurt. To judge him as a QB evaluator / developer is premature.
Why do people act like trading up in the draft is so easy to do. Like the other team doesn't have to be willing to trade down and these teams won't be requesting an arm and a leg. When the Texans reportedly tried to find a trading partner to trade out of the first pick, they couldn't find one because the price they were asking was too high. These teams aren't stupid and will be asking a lot as well. Let's not forget the RGIII experiment. Washington gave up 3 drafts to go from 6 to 2 for a QB that gave them one good year. And he was more of a "sure thing" than any of the QBs in this draft. If the deal is right, I'm all for it but Im not for mortgaging the future for another Mark Sanchez.
Did you mean, "draft picks"? Because they most assuredly did not give up three drafts - sincerely clarifying. And, FYI: results are not relevant to the initial point you were making - that trading up is hard; it is - I agree. But RG3's failure doesn't have any impact on how hard/easy it is. If they think there's a guy in this draft who can compete at, or above the same level as Luck, Bortles and Mariotta... I'm starting to lean toward the "do whatever" camp. My first choice is to kick Rivers, Brees, etc., tires. But beyond that, I'd be uber-aggressive in the draft - again, if they think that highly of one of these guys. Washington sent two 1s an a 2; I think I'd do that.
I wish this thread had more analysis and discussion of the 2016 Draft: QB Progress Watch... ... and less discussion about B'Ob and the 2015 Texans QB situation.
