Well I think that's true, I guess it just depends on what is meant by "negative value". If it means you can't get back for them as much as they are worth to your team then JJ Watt has negative value too. Anyway, I just think the knee jerking about Clowney is pretty ridiculous. Could the kid end up a bust? Sure, but there was a time people thought Curry was a bust as an NBA player because he couldn't stay healthy.
Are all 3 going to pan out? If no, then why sit back and take what's left over? Why not try to get the one you like most? Only 3 QBs may go in the first, but they may also go before the Texans pick.
Because the cost isn't worth it. Sitting back and taking what was left over gave Oakland the best QB in the draft a few years back....trading up to get the one they liked most (that was left after Luck went #1) is how the Redskins wasted a ton of picks on the 2nd best QB that they drafted that year.
Serious question, has there ever been a great NFL QB that did not have success at some level in college? This upcoming QB class seems like the largest collection of great tools but with little on field team achievements. I mean let's take a look at these QB highest accomplishments. Goff - Armed Forces Bowl Champion Wentz - 2x FCS D1 Champion Lynch - Miami Beach Bowl Champion Cook - 2x Big Ten Champion, Rose Bowl Champion, Cotton Bowl Champion Hack - Pinstripe Bowl Champion Dak - Belk Bowl Champion, Orange Bowl Runner-Up (#1 ranking)Liberty Bowl Champion Cardale - Big Ten Champion, Sugar Bowl Champion (National Champion) Coker - This guy won everything but as a backup behind really good NFL talent. As a starter he is credited with SEC Champion, Cotton Bowl (semi) Champion, National Champion. The top 3 QB prospects have won nothing!!! Okay Wentz is a "winner" but with an *'s. On the original question, you got Farve (S.Miss), Warner(N.Iowa), Romo(E.Ill), Flacco(Del), and Rodgers(Cal) who was good but didn't have HUGE college accomplishments. To me that is a huge red flag. Yea any of those top 3 could be the next Farve or Rodgers but more than likely their just the next QB flops. Based on accomplishments Cook, Dak, and Coker look best. Based on tools + accomplishments Cook looks legit. Too bad he's a douche.
What if the Texans really want either Goff or Lynch? If you are confident in your analysis of them, then you do whatever it takes to get one of them. That's why you trade up. And RG3 was a very good pick for them, but he was mishandled.
I don't know how I feel - but I'm pretty sure being passive and ultimately lucky probably isn't the best course of action. I heard the guys on 610 this morning kick around the idea that Carolina has essentially destroyed its cap and drafted poorly but that it didn't derail them (at least, not yet) because they have a transcendent QB and defensive anchor and they've been able to fill roles with "just another guy" guys... and, as such, the Texans, who have Hopkins and Watt + a slew of other good players, should deal whatever they have to go get their QB (if they view one as a franchise QB) and trust that they can fill holes on the cheap, etc. And, I gotta tell ya... I don't think it's a terrible idea. You're sacrificing future success and reducing your margin for error if there are any significant injuries... but this team does look all the world like a competent QB away from being a 10-win contender. I'd much rather them kick the tires on some older, expensive vets. But... man, if they Goff or Wentz is legit, I mean... why wouldn;t you trade your seven picks for him? Am I crazy? DO I need to take a breather?...
I disagree, and so would Russel Wilson. Sometimes you can have all the tools but don't have "IT." IT is difficult to measure but I think you can see some of it by what a person is able to accomplish.
