He was the #2 pick, and was universally projected to go top 5, so he most certainly should have been in consideration. We went with Appel. Now that we've traded Appel, it can be officially said that Luhnow botched that pick. S**t happens, nobodies perfect. Luhnow has us in such a great spot right now, even a misfire as big as that one doesn't really bother me. And somebody needs to put Correa's ass in some bubble wrap and send him to Kissimmee.
Yeah, doesn't mean the d-sci behind the pick was wrong though. It's easy for me to forget a time before Keuchel/McHugh/McCullers but we were really hard up for a good starting pitcher. Realllly hard up. The fact that Appel has flopped so badly compared to Bryant really hurts the decision in hindsite.
[rQUOTEr]Doug Fister, RHP, free agent — The Astros have been exploring the possibility of Fister to round out their rotation. They’ve also discussed Yovani Gallardo, Alfredo Simon, and Kyle Lohse. The Astros would like to add a starter but are looking for a bargain at this stage. https://goo.gl/bDTyQl[/rQUOTEr]
IIRC from the Kris Bryant thread, the Astros had Colin Moran ranked ahead of Bryant so he was never coming here which kills any what if scenario. Still fun to think about what could have been
Lots of people thought, and still do, that Bryant will end up at LF/1B soon. If he can stay at 3B for a few years or if he turns into Pujols then damn, yeah they missed. Not that I know anything but I wanted them to draft him. On another note, so there's going to be a big sign that says "OXY" in LF? Wouldn't that fit better in Atlanta? Or South Oklahoma?
Over the last 3 years, Gallardo has a 3.70 ERA and a 3.95 FIP, Scott Feldman has a 3.83 ERA and a 4.13. Gallardo's peripherals have also been coming down significantly, suggesting that maintaining his recent mid -3's ERA is unlikely. Most of us don't want him for that reason. Sure he is a capable MLB starter, but on a good team he is likely your 4th or 5th starter. That's not the guy you give 15-18 million a year and a draft pick to get.
If Gallardo was on another team and signed to whatever contract it'll take to sign him now, and if that team was demanding in return [Top 10 Prospect X] who the Astros had recently selected with the 18th overall pick of the 2016 MLB Draft, how many people would want to make that trade? No, thanks on Gallardo. Get someone nearly as good instead and keep that pick.
I'm totally fine with the Astros offseason as is. They added the one piece that, by not having, prevented them from advancing to the ALCS. If they were to forfeit a pick to the hated Rangers by signing middle of the road pitcher Gallardo, I would not be happy.
I agree with both of you. Given no one available is significantly better than Feldman, it seems getting another starter is for insurance purposes. None of these guys is likely to make us better if the 5 guys we have stay healthy.
Mitch Moreland signed another 1 year deal with the Rangers. I mean why in the world wouldn't we go after him?
Dallas Keuchel signed another 1 year deal with the Astros. Why in the world wouldn't anybody else go after him?
