Fangraphs had his WAR at 2.8 last year ($22.7M value), and 0.7 in 2014 ($5.4M). 5 years $100M is Braun's contract. That isn't cheap. He WAS those things (he made the all-star team as an injury replacement).
If they could get a top 50 prospect and move that contract they would have pulled the trigger already. 32 years old, 100 million left on deal, injury issues, PED baggage, one year removed from a mediocre season, plus most teams have addressed their off season holes which leaves a thinner market. I imagine the Brewers are gonna wait and see if Braun can have a great season and then move him next year or at the deadline.
Lunhow is smart. Keeping the chemistry in tact. Team full of youngsters making pennies compared to a big time free agent who will come in and get outperformed by Correa, Altuve, and Springer. Keep them together. Lots of wins!
Cespedes gets 3/$75 with opt out after year 1 from the Mets https://www.yahoo.com/sports/news/y...to-mets-on-three-year-contract-044250438.html
A relatively low risk move for the Mets given current contracts, but the one year opt out really hurts the deal's potential upside. Given they are thinking WS, I'm sure they are fine with a one and done year from Cespedes. But 50 million beyond this year for a guy that was merely OK in 2013 and 2014 is a risk, and he only sees those years if he is merely OK this year as well. A contract like that likely wouldn't have helped us. One of the reasons you sign Cespedes is to lock him up beyond this year when Rasmus and Gomez could walk. Now the only way he stays is if he has a bad year, and he was already likely a lateral move for this season.
interesting...julia morales just tweeted out that gattis looks to be doing some catching in the spring. lost 18 lbs in offseason.
