Yeah, I don't get why people complain about Morey not talking when we were doing bad. What do they expect him to say anyway? Host: Do you think Brewer is playing bad? Morey: Yeah, he's pretty bad. Host: How about Harden? Morey: Yeah, we all know he needs to play harder. Clap, clap. Host: Are you going to make some moves? Morey: Of course. Look at the players. They are awful. Don't you think I'm losing sleep just to think how to hoodwink other GMs into taking them off my hands?
my guess was that we would have to attach capela to brewer in order to get any type of useful rotation player back, hoping for something like a thaddeus young (who also has a long contract) for instance. as far as brewer in transition, i don't like the fact the gambles so very often on his man going for the steal. sure he gets out on the break for easy points, but our halfcourt D also collapse probably even more often when his man blows right by. and the need for a guy like him exists imo largely because we don't have a coach with a real halfcourt offensive system incorporating ball and player movement. i hear you, but i look at it another way: as bad as the team as been playing, guys who are still posting here have to be diehard rocket fans who really care about the team. especially the old timers, it's hard not to respect them for sticking with the team they are both very streaky, and i'm not sure either is the answer next to harden. i think brewer's style especially does not lend well to starter's minutes and he'd be a disaster trying to D up on the more physical wings in the league
WTF? That was like 3 years ago, I don't care a bit if he is out there in the media any longer. I don't blame him for hunkering down when the team sucked, what is there to say that is going to help matters? DD
wow look here, Daryl Morey on 790 a few minutes back. Just posting this as I hear it. Excuse me for the typos and something I may have missed. ============================================================================================ 790: Good Morning, what do we know about Dwight this morning? DM: I mean obviously he couldn't go back into the game yday. A lot of what we would know depends on his swelling this morning. I don't have an update yet. 790: That was an ominous way to start things yday. He has been playing well, double doubles and scoring efficiently. DM: We have to find a way to persevere he has been a huge part of our improved play, our moderate play I should say. 790: Do you have numbers or ranking or stats of finishing at the basket. Seems to be something that has plagued you guys in finding bigs (right from Asik days) that can finish consistently around the bucket? DM: Dwight getting hurt against Drummond is not ideal. TJ is one of the better finishers I have seen in college and pros and he has not done well this year. It is something we work on and is one of the most important skills. People talk about jumpshots etc but ability to shoot 60% - 70 % around the rim is important. 790: What can you tell us about the decision of opening the 3rd quarter to bring KJ to foul Andre as many times as you did? Did you talk about it? Was it planned? DM: Firstly I think the rule needs to be changed. I have brought it up many times and I don't have any control. Reality is fouls was to stop people from hitting players when they try to shoot. When the penalty does not work, they need to change rules. I feel strongly the rules need to be changed. While the rule is there I feel that teams have to use everything at their disposal to try and win the game. This is one tool that is there that makes sense to use at certain times to try and win. Esp against teams like Detroit who have a guy who can't make free throws 790: Me (Lance) and you have talked about this Daryl that if you make 1 out of 2. And asking for 50% shouldn't be that hard DM: I agree but people come for entertainment..... 790: Are you telling me there would not be a Dr. Pepper Free throw shooting contest at the all star game? DM: I don't think that will get good ratings but again league has to do something that would help the product on the floor 790: That stretch though Daryl it worked. You cut the deficit and then took the lead. DM: Unfortunately our defense is very porous and poor. Again it a tool that is there and obviously Drummond is a poor shooter and it helps us. 790: When you are looking at the team, you are always looking at a macro view. From your macro view 44 games in what is so different this year compared to last year? DM: Primarily defense has been a big dropoff and that is something we continue to work and we got good ways to go before we are where we want to be. Offense has worked to get better. Offense can make the playoffs and win a couple of rounds 790: Is it strategy, is it effort, is it a combination of both? We all feel for you. It's been tough DM: We are a volatile group. We are a volatile group last year and lot fo that volatility worked in the positive direction last year and this year a lot of volatility ahs worked in the other direction. It has been frustrating we haven't made more strides. ================================================ My take listening live. Daryl didn't want to be there doing this interview. He has had sleepless nights. He sounded very frustrated and agitated and at this point, it seems like he doesn't really know what to do. He sounds defeated and ready to blow this thing up (again just my interpretation listening to him).
His philosophy is volatile, his trades are volatile, his diet is volatile. Thibs as our new coach and GM. Get this Garfield cat outta here.#pissarmy#wethepeople
Morey cannot possibly believe this team has a prayer of winning a couple of rounds in the playoffs. They'll be lucky to win a couple of games. At least he acknowledges the defense sucks. I just hope he now understands the importance of a good head coach.
If he decides to blow it up, he needs to really BLOW IT UP. Trading a couple of guys at the end of our rotation isn't really getting to the root of the problem.
Daryl, your defense sucked with McHale, it sucks without McHale. You decided to promote the "defensive coordinator" to head coach, why again? OK, fine, it's not the coaches fault, it's the player's fault. Why did you assemble a roster of no defenders? Oh right "We have 3 elite defenders in Beverley, Ariza & Dwight." Daryl, why did you tell Jonathan Feigen this is a team no one wants to face in the playoffs? Daryl, do you believe half of the **** you say?
It's time to blow it up. Time to move out Harden's comfort friends, Ariza and Bev, and see if we can get back a dynamic two-way player next to Harden along with another better defender. I'm all in on a Batum deal if it can be done. Ariza/Bev for Batum/Roberts. We need a different starting 3 and 1 in here. Because we're simply not going anywhere with these guys. And they're getting worse.
boy, I'm a big Batum fan too, but I fear he's inconsistent. He had zero last night for points against OKC on a night when even Jerry scored 16. Not sure about this. I also still like Ariza. Plus I think Charlotte loves Batum. There's got to be something better out there that Morey can dig up.
The Bulls had a lot of success under Thibs. It wasn't his fault Derrick Rose was constantly in and out of the lineup with knee injuries.
thanx FTW for typing all that. Repped. This team is delusional. Win a couple of rounds in the playoffs? In the playoffs where defene MATTERS the most and the teams have spent time scouting and make adjustments? Are you kidding me? Particularly as a 7th seed.
Guys I don't think he was saying he thinks the Rockets right now could win a couple rounds in the playoffs. I think he is saying that the OFFENSE has gotten to a point where it would be good enough to win a couple of rounds in the playoffs, but the DEFENSE is terrible (at a point where the Rockets couldn't even make the playoffs essentially). So basically the offense is at a level fitting for getting to the conference finals, but the defense is not.
Even that I disagree with. The offense is ok, but when this team really needs a basket, what plays do they run? It usually winds up being a Harden ISO. In the playoffs, games often come down to the final minutes where every possession counts. Does anyone really have faith in this team's offense to execute and get good shots in crunch time?
That's fine. I'm just saying it's time to get Ariza/Bev up on the trading block and move on. We aren't going to win with this bunch. And we need to move off long term salaries so we have as much space as possible to rebuild this summer. Gotta find quality starting perimeter players that can both defend and make plays so the basketball moves and Harden has to accept the help he so desperately needs so he doesn't wind up running out of gas before he's 30. I have no idea if Batum is available for that package either. But we need to be looking at acquiring some expiring contracts of good players so we can use them to make a run this season and have fun figuring out what they can do and also have maximum options for a quick re-tooling in free agency this summer. In my opinion, it's time to go all-in on trying to acquire a young star. If it costs us Ariza/Bev (converting them to assets) plus other assets to get a guy like Oladipo or Smart or Hezonja I'm all for doing it. Get that young star, keep DMo if at all possible and fill in the gaps with expiring deals and minimum salary signings. These guys are going nowhere. We know we are totally broken defensively. We can see Ariza aging right before our eyes and we can see that Bev is getting hurt more and more and frankly he's lost a step and gets beat constantly on PnR now. We gotta get moving in a different direction. Gotta try to get a real good defensive point guard in here that can defend and water down the efficiency of opposing points and is a great playmaker and will take the ball out of Harden's hands and/or we've got to get a 3 man that is good on both ends and can make plays. These guys can't defend. Our perimeter is so porous that Dwight is totally overloaded defensively down low. Dwight has no defensive help down there anyways. Capela is far overrated. It's time to move him before the league wakes up and realizes he isn't that good. Time to move him while the pundits are calling him the next big thing (he ain't). It's time to go for it. There is absolutely NO REASON to keep these guys together. We aren't going to win with them. They can't defend. There is not a single player on this roster that can take the ball away from Harden. And they're getting worse. Ariza, Bev, Brewer.....they all need to go.
