Katniss is described as olive skinned, which I already said and you quoted me saying. Olive skinned is a range of skin tones commonly seen around the Mediterranean sea including Italians, Greeks, Cypriots, Turks, Syrians, Israelis, Arabs, Spaniards, Moroccans, etc. It can also include darker skin tones such as lighter skinned people from India and Pakistan, and people from Latin America. Grey eye color is most common in northern and eastern Europe, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Middle East, Iran, and Algeria. Black hair is common among all groups, including all of the groups listed for olive skin and grey eyes. Katniss also has a sister with blonde hair and blue eyes. All of that taken together doesn't make it seem unusual to cast Katniss as caucasian. It would seem far more unusual to have a middle eastern or north African girl with a blonde haired blue eyed sister than a dark haired white girl.
Again, you have to remember that you are talking about a story set into a dystopian future. She never even says what race they are though. She makes them ambiguous, her sister and mother have blonde hair, what about her father? She says they are not meant to be biracial, but I will explain to why that doesn't matter at all. As to the question of Rue and Thresh she just plainly says "They're african-american." yet she never just comes out and says that about Katniss. She's very vague on it. The Director. Also, this is counter to the point that "If you have the chops to play the role, you get the role." and then say "Only white females can play this role." The argument isn't "Well Jlaw beat out everyone else." which she's certainly capable of doing any ways. It's that other women weren't even getting the chance to play the role. Is this the only instance of racial casting in Hollywood. Hell no, it isn't. I'm sure it was a lot more blatant the further you go back in time of course. So I know your argument. "Well, she says they aren't biracial so what's the issue here? If they are not biracial, then she either has to be this or that right?" The issue is Hollywood has a double standard when it comes to this kind of thing. They'll have white people playing anything from East-Asians, to Egyptians in a blink of an eye...please don't bring up Marvel characters either. They have been gender bending and race bending their characters for a while now. Why couldn't they open up the casting call to everyone? If some Latina girl won it you think they could not have gave her gray eyes and brown hair? Jlaw isn't olive skinned, so they were flexible with that. What harm could be done for giving those other women a chance to play that role?
No, because basketball is about athletic ability, and movies fundamentally rely on aesthetics to tell a story and distinguish and market their product, otherwise scripted radio shows would still be economically viable.
The only reason I used basketball is because it was used before, I've already mentioned that it's silly trying to compare a sport to art.
I am shocked there would be an exclusionary group of people in hollywood. I mean I never..the nerve. personally I find it a bit funny that black people think there is this great big white conspiracy against them. like all white people are up late at night trying to figure out ways to bring a brother down. I hate to put this in blunt terms but nobody cares honestly..is that racist to not give a f**uck? like is that inherently racist that I dont care about black people or I mean like I dont spend much time on them? its like akin to the amount of time I spend thinking about amish people. somehow that might be racist? I guess it might have gotten to the point where not caring is racist?
In sports, getting the best players leads to more wins, which leads to more fans, which leads to more money. In movies, getting the actors with the most mass appeal leads to more tickets sold, which leads to more money. There's really not much difference.
the Original Aunt Viv speaks on this issue. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/N9eY-kKXBnQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Will Smith is awful, his wife is awful and their idiot son is the most awful of them all...so yeah, I really don't care what they have to say.
I know spike lee and jada pinkett smith are huge proprietors of this movement or at least have integrated their agendas into it, both haven't done anything relevant in the last 10 years. Chi-raq went straight to Amazon, speaking of smith, her husband will smith himself, once the biggest leading man-cash-cow in the world has fallen (horrible accent in conclusion, focus was 'alright' at best..). I mention will because she hasn't done anything notable in a long time either. Let's face it, as a minority myself, there simply wasn't 'great' or truly worthy content put out this past Oscar season. Creed was good! NWA biopic was really good.... But not great, simple as that. And rathe than blaming this institution or that, why bother with the pseudo-politics of the industry and the shenanigans as opposed to simply putting out good content?

94% of Oscar voters are white and average 63 years of age. The psuedo politics of the industry are heavily skewed by race.
Eh, it's not the end of the world. White people watch mostly white entertainment so mostly white entertainment gets green lit, sells out, and gets nominated for awards. It's a bias but I don't think it's necessarily mean spirited. Depending on how and where you live you could literally go your entire life with very limited exposure to any other race's culture. The trick is getting people to first actually view movies with minority leads then keeping them from placing them in the "novelty" category. I was with her until the butt hurt came on strong.
Spike, Jada, Will and Clooney should start their own awards show. I would onlt care marginally less than I do about the AA. I would say great. Ryan Coogler shot it really well. Probably deserved a looking at best director. Pumped for his Marvel movie. Sly stole the movie and Michael B. Jordan was so bland.
But Star Wars the Force Unleashed is so popular? Being led by three unknown actors? Some movies led by big names fail too. I mean there is a long list of movies that flopped and a long list of surprise success movies. It's a bad point to make. Sports and Movies are nothing alike, compare it at least to another art medium. One is based in facts, actual things you can know are true. Peyton Manning is better than Hoyer. This is the truth. Lebron James is better than Corey Brewer, this is the truth. You can't argue it, you can't discuss it. The only things we can argue in sports are hypothetical. Can Lebron beat Jordan? Could Curry's Warriors beat the Jordan's Bulls? You can't say a movie is better than another and say it is truth or fact. You can't say an actor is better than another and claim it is fact. It is all subjective. Which is why yes, most people don't care about the Oscars. Some people detest these movies, I know someone that thinks Transformer series is excellent. I think it's trash, more people think it's trash than excellent but you can't prove to the person that thinks it's a great movie that it sucks. I can say "Star Wars is the best movie of 2015." and you can say otherwise, we'd both be right. You can't say "The Rockets were the best team last season." because we know it's false. The wins and losses are certain. If what you said were true, then getting the actors with the most mass appeal would ALWAYS work, but we know that doesn't happen. Like "Aloha" or "Steve Jobs" I mean there are flops with big names attached to them every year. Again, you may not care and that's fine. If you really truly don't care then why post in the thread that you don't care? The argument "Who cares? Who cares about the awards? Who cares about any of that stuff!" how about the minorities in that industry or aspiring to be in that industry? The argument keeps getting twisted into "Well, nothing was good enough." when that's not really the argument that's been made by those speaking out. Because again, this is a creative medium you can argue all day that so and so should have been nominated over so and so and get nowhere with it. The main thing is that there are roles that just are not available to minorities. Hollywood has thought for a while that you can't sell a big movie with a minority lead. Slowly that's changing, as I've said before...but it was thanks to a lot of "crying" and "whining" about it throughout the years.
