I'll never forget driving the '62 Vomit Comet out on a two lane highway in far West Texas with the windows down (the AC was frequently busted) with a couple of friends around '69 or '70, when a pair of B-52's in camouflage patterns came roaring a couple of hundred feet off the ground above and just to the right, so you could see them go past. The sound was unbelievable. They're huge! Clearly practicing making a run under enemy radar. We were even in a broad canyon, which gave them more cover and amplified the crazy loud engines. I've had an interest in them ever since. Even read some of the fiction by what's his name much later where they were upgraded killing machines whipping various and sundry enemies. And here they are doing just that after decades have passed. Yeah, they're a trip. They deserve to be on some kind of list.

The AC130 is a modified C-130 which itself is one of the most venerable and widely used workhorses of airplanes. Also a product of the 50's and still in use around the world.

My dad was a Loadmaster on a C-130 and went through combat training on an AC130 -- he said the assault landings they did were an insane semi-controlled fall. The plane slammed so hard on the runway it felt like it would break apart, but they did it over and over. He did work on the Vulcan Cannon replacing the barrels as they overheated -- he said it was crazy.
