So how do you place value on a school or a football program? How about value for the fans? I liked the SWC a lot more than the Big 12 because I cared more about the members of the SWC than the members of the Big12. To me, a fan, the SWC had more entertainment value than the Big 12. How about doing what's best for the fans instead what makes the most money. Longhorn fans used to get to see the Horns play in Houston on a regular basis when Rice and UH were in the same conference. That was a good thing for Longhorn fans in Houston and Texas. Now UT gets to play West Virginia, Kansas State, Iowa State, and Kansas. This doesn't have much entertainment value for a fan. UT may be valuable to some people, but not to everyone.
Uh, no. It's not bitterness. It's just a basic weather check. In the last 5 years, the Big 12 lost two teams to the SEC, one team to the Big 10, and one team to the PAC 12. How many teams has the Big 12 taken from a P5? None. The Big 12 has the geographical disadvantage of being the closest conference to the rest of the P5. They can bleed teams in every direction and they already have as I noted above. In addition, Texas consistently doing solely what's in their own best interest rather than what's in the best interest of the conference is another reason why the Big 12 is in a tenuous position. I believe it's the only P5 conference without a TV network which is nuts in this day and age. Ultimately I think you'll see four, sixteen team super conferences with the Big 12 shredded among the other power P5 conferences. Texas might even just go independent in football. So no, I don't think UH should be interested in signing up for the uncertainty that lies ahead for the Big 12. It's not ego, it's just being a step ahead of the game.
Texas should just go independent like Notre Dame. They have their own network and all the revenue what's the point in even sharing a little bit of money with the smaller guys in the conference? Why do they need the proxy conference? Texas should fire Strong and hire Briles. Then they should go independent. Briles can schedule weak opponents and Texas can rank in the Top 5 and head to the playoffs every year.
Major has a lot of good stuff to say about this. Basically, the road to the playoffs really go through the conferences now and that's why Notre Dame is practically in the ACC. At least half of their games are against ACC teams. Just like you were a step ahead of the game going to the Big East BUT I'm guessing this is where that feeling comes from. There is no instability in the big 12. None. The teams are bonded together for the next 9 years and enjoying a massive TV contract. This all came after teams left and when Texas agreed to concessions that others were asking for. David Boren is a former Governor and Senator and is just using the media and everyone else to exert political pressure on everyone who disagrees with him. The biggest issue is the conference network. It would be best if Texas helps transition that into a big 12 network given how poorly the network performed. I think the news about expansion that comes out of the big 12 meetings will say a lot about how the conference really feels. If the commissioner downplays it like he has been doing it then the conference as a whole doesn't want to expand and it's just Boren. I like the round robin and I think the expansion discussion ended when the ACC voted for their teams to give up their media rights if they leave the conference (despite Clemson and Florida St's objections.) I don't buy the, "psychological disadvantage" of having 10 teams in the big "12". Just for fun, let's say the conference expands eastern by 2 teams. This would be my division alignment. West UT Texas Tech Oklahoma Oklahoma St Kansas Kansas St East Iowa St Baylor TCU West Virgina Team A Team B
Now see this is a bitter comment. I'm not a UH alum so you're not getting any digs on me. UH definitely was not ahead of the game in the Big East debacle which is all the more reason they should avoid the upcoming Big 12 debacle. You're in total denial. You don't lose four teams in five years and talk about how there's no instability.
Yea, there was instability when the last two teams left....4.5 years ago. Since then the big 12 picked up massive TV deals and changed their revenue sharing plan.
That attitude is indicative of the problem really. The Big 12 is circling the drain and UT people don't even see that there is a problem. I think it would benefit UH to join the Big 12 in the short term, but I think in the long run it would be no different than when they joined the Big East, just joining a conference on the verge of collapse. OU probably won't go down with the ship, if things don't start to change, I think they start looking for a new conference and without OU the Big 12 is finished.
UT running the Big 12 confirmed via Freudian slip. Been waiting for you to show up breh. Thread needs more level headed Longhorns.
Great generalization of UT "people". I, for one, loathe the Big 12. Iowa State, Kansas, Tech, Kansas St...just so bland. If there is a Big 12 game on at the same time as an SEC game, I'm pretty much watching the SEC game every time. So much tradition, better football, much better crown interaction, etc. I wanted OU/Texas to both roll to the Pac 12 when it was rumored. The Big 12 is just a giant cluster of boredom to myself. Also, exactly where would OU go? The Pac 12 has already said they have no interest without Texas. They're not going to the Big 10 as they'd have to bring along little brother and their academic standards would not qualify for the conference. The SEC has already stated that they have no interest in 14 teams and have absolutely zero interest in 16 teams. The SEC wanted A&M for the recruiting advantages in Texas. OU gets most of their recruits from Texas. Why would the SEC have any interest in adding OU and Okie lite now that have their feet on the ground here? Edit - BTW, I am totally down with UH coming into the conference. I'd love to be able to drive right down the rode to see UT and OU in town. If the "Texas" schools are what is keeping them out due to "recruiting" issues, that's a load of ****. If you're a big time program, you should have no problem getting the talent you need onto your squad regardless. I hate that argument.
Ouch. That was embarrassing. lol I really don't keep up with UT any longer. I think the Longhorn Network is pure garbage and the University has embarrassed itself these past few years so I've just gone into "meh" mode. Not a very proud Longhorn due to our representation after the Mack debacle.
It wasn't a generalization in that I wasn't talking about you, I was talking about the UT people that matter. You know, like those within the school that help make decisions. As to OU, they are one of the top football schools in the country, it would be super easy for them to join just about any conference they wanted.
No, actually it wouldn't. I'm honestly not trying to be an ass, but you need to read up on this subject more. Changing conferences, being accepted by another conference, academic standards, tag a longs, logistics for tons of other sports...it's not all about football.
Who is the guy who wrote the blog and why should anyone care? What's the point in quoting an opinion blog? Did you write this?
John Nova Lomax has been a full-time journalist in the Bayou City since 2001. He spent eleven years at the Houston Press as a music editor and staff writer and is proudest of helping discover Hayes Carll, rediscover Lil’ Joe Washington, and winning an ASCAP Deems Taylor Award in 2008. With future Marfa city councilman and justice of the peace David Beebe, Lomax walked a total of more than 200 miles of Houston streets on about a dozen different trips, writing about the adventures as part of the “Sole of Houston” blog series. After leaving the music beat, Lomax covered crime, courts and culture for the Press. His work has also appeared in Spin, the New York Times, the Village Voice, and LA Weekly. He has been a senior editor with Texas Monthly since January 2015. He is the author of Houston's Best Dive Bars: Drinking and Diving in the Bayou City, a guidebook to Houston dive bars, and co-author of Murder & Mayhem in Houston: Historic Bayou City Crime, a compilation of notorious Houston crimes.
So UT grad music writer? I do like this article though. Why the capital should be Houston, Not Austin
There is no instability in the Big XII? The profile of the conference is falling. The conference is losing recruits to the SEC and schools like UH. The conference's second strongest member is complaining to anyone that will listen. The conference has lost a handful of programs that is will not be in a position to replace. Yes the conference lacks stability, but the charter member (UT) doesn't care because they can always go independent. The Big XII is now behind the SEC, Big X and PAC in profits.
College athletics make an insane amount of money. I do think college athletes need to be paid or somehow compensated.Record Revenues for UT
Then wouldn't we have seen some type of decline after 5 years of bad football? Yet everything, at least from a branding/monetary perspective, has been trending upwards. Not saying you can have a decade of 5-7 seasons without feeling ill effects like you've said but the UT brand has a lot more staying power than what you are suggesting. Comparing UT to A&M and Miami is simply not a good comparison. That is not a knock on those schools by any means, but there is a reason why schools like Michigan and Notre Dame can through some serious rough patches like Texas is going through right now and still be one of the most valuable programs in the country. With that said, Texas still blows both of the schools out of the water in terms of team value. http://www.forbes.com/sites/chrissm...-dame-and-tennessee/#2715e4857a0b1be6b1585130
