It's pretty much the same pee-pee games merry-go-round. Texas based Big 12 source = UH is teh sux0r. That tune is as old as time, and no one is surprised to hear it. Regardless of the outcome, the Big 12 is doomed unless it does something to address the inequity, and A1 on that list is the LHN and the lack of a Big 12 network. If UH gets in, I hope we immediately start planning our exit strategy.
I can understand criticizing the conference for the way it's run...but I don't get this whole "irrelevant" stuff at all. That is a narrative that is just untrue. OU was playing very well into the playoffs this season...Baylor and OU are both preseason top 5 teams heading into next season. And in hoops, the Big XII is absolutely amazing.
Thats true, and I dont think you will find anyone who will disagree with you. But the writing was on the wall for the conference after Nebraska, Colorado, ATM, Mizzou left. If and when the B12 collapses, its not like UT and OU are going to have a tough time finding another home. The 3rd tier rights will come up again but hopefully a compromise would be reached. As of now though, there is no real reason to compromise for the sake of the big12 cause its probably doomed anyways in part because of Texas but also because most of the other universities carry no clout themselves. I mean which university is going to turn down a guaranteed 15mil per for 20 years for basically doing nothing?
Yea it's just bitterness. The rise in ego over a single season that UH fans have seen is truly breathtaking. They are now too good for the big 12. In basketball, the top 2 ranked teams are from the Big 12 and 4 total in the top 25. In final Football AP, 1 in the top 5, 2 in the top 10, 3 in the top 15, 5 in the top 20. And again, there was 0 doubt OU would end up out of the playoffs before championship weekend. The SEC has made amazing inroads in Texas recruiting since adding A&M. I'm positive the ACC is going to follow suit and bring in UH so they get access to Texas. UH just needs to keep the wins coming which I'm betting Herman can do next year. The fans just need to nut up and go to the games and not look for cookies because their attendance was a little better at the end of the year. It's still sad that they couldn't sell out a conference championship but they'll have a whole offseason to build excitement and pre-sales on the next season. That all being said, if the Big 12 does disband in 2025 and OU, Ok St and Texas talk to the Pac 12 about joining again then I believe they will prefer UH over Texas Tech. I can't remember what exactly the last report was on that though. I really really really don't think UH or OU gets an invite to the big 12 without Texas on board. That was the master plan for the Pac 12 a few years ago. They flat out told Boren that they are not ready to add OU without texas. That is nothing against OU or Houston. The Pac 12 is just a better run and smarter conference IMO. OU is a lot more valuable paired with Texas and vice versa. What I think could happen: 1) ACC invites UH and 2nd team to complete the first 14 team super conference. The model that the SEC used with A&M has worked out really really well for them (both recruiting and views). 2) Pac 12 invites OU, Ok St, UT and TT/UH in 2025 to complete the super conference. I was excited when this looked like it was going to happen a few years ago. I really don't think UH gets an invite from the Pac 12 yet. This is not actually a a slight to UH or where they are. It's just that the pac 12 is really smart. Also, I've seen that one guy throw something at tinman and Donny threw this at me. If you can't take people not changing their opinions and telling you how right you are then get out. It's really childish for you to accuse us of hating UH just because we disagree with you. I grew up in Houston and went to a couple UH games. I mean I'm not a fan but I don't have anything against them. I just have my own opinions and I still disagree with the assessments from Donny and others and I feel comfortable with my level of explanation. Part of it is based on my general opinions on college football and also my understanding of media markets, ad revenue and TV ratings based on my professional life. Grow up and don't assume that you are god and everyone who doesn't tell you how right you are is just bias because they don't like you. If you want a massive circle jerk then stay in your UH thread.
I like UH and I actively root for them. I hope they get in to the Big XII, ultimately. Whether that's likely or not, I don't really know. I wonder where my alma mater, Baylor, would end up if the Big XII came crashing down.
Unless the next step is 16-18 team super conferences, it'll be interesting to see what the NCAA would do, if anything, to prevent a lot of good schools like Baylor, TCU, Kansas, WVU from being homeless. These schools, even with their pick of non-P5 schools, probably wouldn't enough to sustain a P5 conference in their own.
That's a really good question. They were the big Big 12 campaigners when news first reported that teams could break off to the Pac 12. They put out that "Don't Mess With Texas" letter to the public that got taken down by the state of Texas's trademark division. Things have changed though and they are a much better program. I'm not sure if that means the Pac 12 would rather have them than Texas Tech. There were reports that the Pac 12 would have an issue with bailor's religious roots but I don't buy that. That's an interesting question but anyone thinks that is remotely close to happening doesn't know what they are talking about. The media contracts that all the conferences signed were pretty iron clad. The big 12 has a great TV contract even though it's not as rich as a couple of the other conferences. They're all still filthy rich. As for Texas, they got rid of Dodds and the old Big 12 conference commissioner Beebe (Texas lackey). The Big 12 hired Bowlsby who has no Texas ties and came from being the AD of Stanford and had the support of the whole league. Texas gave up the old model where league revenue was unbalanced and based on what school generated the most money in viewership to a model where every team is equal. I don't know what you guys want. If you think that UT is the only one that favors 10 teams or not including UH then you don't know what you are talking about. Just because the OU president talks in the media doesn't mean he speaks for everyone else. ESPN came to UT about a network and they made it happen. Yearly royalties to the school (5 mill went to non-athletic programs) and national exposure. I don't know what school would turn that down. The program took a dive though since the launch and the network doesn't seem to work. It would be good if they could come to an agreement to move that into a big 12 network. It would also ease the coaching staffs at UT from the demand of all of the content that is needed. Stop blaming UT for all your problems especially since the big 12 wouldn't exist without them.
I think it would be for the best if UT went independent which would allow the Big 12 to be run more competently. The Big 12 gets stronger, UT gets to do whatever the hell they want. Win-win.
I didn't go to the University of Houston. Further I have repeatedly stated that the University of Houston doesn't really need to be in the Big XII, they just need to get into a P5 conference. The University of Texas, like Notre Dame have the right to do what they view as in their best interest, however that doesn't mean it is in the best interest of the Big XII.
The big 12 would collapse if UT left. They're obviously the most valuable program in college (might be #2 right now) but also consider OU at #9 is the only other big 12 team in the top 25 valuable programs in the NCAA per Forbes. I'm sure that is somehow Texas's fault. I also don't think it's in UT's best interest. If they leave then it will be to the Pac 12. Then again who knows.
The Big XII is still a P5 conference, but it's influence has really suffered over the last decade; primarily because of poor management and issues with UT.
I'm not sure that's true. UT isn't what it once was, sure they bring in a lot of money as a brand, but now it's other schools in the Big 12 that are the big fish when it comes to performance and bowl income. UT is looking a whole lot like it is in a death spiral. UT is what, the 5th best football program in the state? Unless they turn things around, UT won't matter like they once did for much longer. Their recruiting has already fallen off so I'm not sure how likely it is for them to turn things around.
This is funny....... after UT played a major part in A&M, Colorado, Missouri and Nebraska leaving. The University of Texas hasn't finished the season ranked in 4 years... the last being 2012 when they finished #19 in the country. They have finished the season unranked more often than not since 2009.
Well the brand alone is worth something, but yeah....if they can't turn things around with their football program, that isn't going to last.
The brand absolutely matters. The other schools don't want Texas to go away. They either want them to be a more equitable partner or they want to go to another conference, but none of them want Texas to jump ship and leave them holding the bag. Texas could lose every game for the next 3 years and still be the most valuable brand in the Big 12.
I'm not sure that's true. At one point, the U was a HUGE brand, now they're nothing. You have to have some success or non-alumni fans will leave you and UT is nothing without non-alumni fans.
There are huge natural differences between Miami and Texas that make the comparison worthless. Just to be clear, I'm not saying Texas never has to win again, but they have a lot of brand cache built up. Texas and A&M dominated the Texas market before UT started winning big again in the early 2000s and A&M has essentially never been a big winner.
Michigan is a good example. They haven't won a title since 97 and have been barely relevant for many of those years. They are still the second most profitable football program in America and are still a huge brand.
No doubt that the other members of the Big XII want UT to stay in the conference but ONLY if there is more equity and that is the sticking point. Some of the schools (OU) would have no difficulty joining the conference of their liking, the problem is schools like TCU, TT and BU that would potentially be looking at a non P5 conference. Something is going to give, either UT goes independent on football, OU leaves of UT gives on some issues.
