perhaps i don't fully understand your position here.....are you saying that nobody from the organization really needs to address the team's wretched showing thus far with the fanbase, or that the GM is not the person to do it? as far as i'm concerned, the GM chose the system, players, and coaches. the GM has yet to bring in an actual head coach more than 4years running since firing the last one because he couldn't get along with him. the GM signed brewer to one of the worst current contracts in the entire league while letting josh smith (who wanted to be here and waited on us for weeks) leave to a conference rival for minimum wage -- and with dmo out, dwight in and out, harrell a rookie, jones playing like crap until last week, and our interior defense at the league bottom -- we really could have used josh smith this season. also the GM wasted our 1st round pick - yet again. so i would say DM reaching out to the fanbase is something necessary and overdue.
Uhmm well to be fair, McHale did good until this year. He might not have been the greatest when it comes to X's and O's but he had the team playing hard. His record as a coach was better than RAs, who you claim is a real coach. I know having Harden obviously helps, but he also coached the pre-Harden Rockets just as well as RA ever did. Until this year, players seemed to enjoy playing for McHale. Would I have preferred some other coach instead of McHale, yeah - but again, it seemed to work for the players and you know what they say: if it ain't broke ... People really need to stop blaming Morey for Smith. Smith did NOT want to be here. Maybe he had to wait a bit, so that the Rockets could get things sorted (KJ) BUT the Rockets had offered Smith more money than the Clippers did - Smith was the one who turned down the Rockets and chose to take less money for a supposedly bigger role. Sure the Rockets could have picked someone else in the first round of the draft, but injuries are not something you can predict. Dekker was actually predicted to go higher in the draft than where the Rockets picked him, so can't really blame them for that. Time will tell how good he is going to be. Potential is definitely there. Also, regardless of who their first round pick would or should have been in your opinion - it is very unlikely that that player would have seen time on the court. As for Brewer, sure his contract was somewhat excessive. But after last year's run despite all the injuries, the FO wanted what a lot of posters on here have been wanting for years - CONTINUITY. They felt that after a deep playoff run that they were finally at a point where they could do that. Nobody could have predicted how horrible Brewer was going to be. At least as of late, he seems to have turned a corner. He seems to be doing the things that he did last year - hustle, run out of control like a headless chicken and still make the shot. Up until recently he didn't hustle, didn't make any baskets but ran around like a headless out of control chicken
Big balls to say that but big coward to reassure the crowd when things aren't so great. Cant hold him accountable either, only the bottom of the food chain players we can bash.
To anyone saying Brewers contract is "one of the worst in the NBA" - you are wrong. The cap is increasing and he is fairly easy to move because his salary amount is not really that high. He signed a 3/24 contract.
it's no win for Morey if he goes on radio when team is losing either he's dishonest, or he has to be honest and call out players publicly, which is counter-productive
I agree with this. Over the last 20 games Corey has shot 48.3% from 2, 38.9% from 3, and 87.5% from the FT line. He's averaged over a steal a game. And his offensive rebounds and steals have offset his turnovers 30/27. This is the good Corey Brewer.
Morey wasn't on the radio during the losing streak, because he was taking holiday time off prior to GMs having to work no-stop from trade deadlines, to draft analysis, to FAncy, etc. It was Dec 24th through Jan 4th. Plus, that week was all about football on radio, Texans, etc.
Nook and Jopat, what do you think we could get back, for example, in a trade for brewer straight up today?
i think if he calls the team out as a whole, including the players, coaches, himself, etc.......then it's not going to hurt any players' feelings. in fact, hearing morey have to publicly apologize to the fans may have lit a fire under those players by making them feel ashamed for their lack of effort. everybody knows the product on the court has been crap so far, i think it would have shown some class on the organization's part to simply communicate "we've made some mistakes, we're going to work to fix things"
No offense to Nook, but why do you need them to tell you? You have the knowledge, and ability to process likely scenarios yourself. Jopat is the king of propagating himself in times like theses (a few weeks before the trade deadline, draft night, start of free agency, etc.) to try and put posts out there that he can later say "See what I predicted... I am the king insider". His resume speaks pretty loud and clear. I want to know from you. Put yourself in other GM's shoes... who would want Brewer, how would they view his contract, and what would they give up to get him?
I listened to at least one 790 interview after a piss poor loss a few weeks ago. I don't even know if its necessarily Morey not wanting to go on, or the 790 producer really not wanting to schedule much Rockets talk since there wasn't much to talk about other than Harden, Howard, Morey, or Les bashing. They'd probably get better ratings talking about the NFL draft, some Bill Obrien quotes, or whatnot. If Morey isn't going to have much to say, why schedule calls with him? People like DD complain that Morey is out in the media too much, and then people complain when he's not out there enough. The guy wont be able to win with the Clutchfans mob crews, but all things considering when you compare him to other NBA, or major sports GM's, he's one of the most accessible GM's in sports.
well Nook said brewer is fairly easy to move and Jopat said we have the good Corey Brewer now -- so i asked what we can get for him in their minds then. what's it's to you? i think we would need to attach a positive asset to brew in order to unload his contract, and they seem to think otherwise. i'm conceding that they're legit posters here and i may in fact be wrong about this -- so let's just let them explain..
Yes and people forget how important Brewer is in transition (both offense and defense). The Rockets want to avoid half court sets and to do that they need Brewer being aggressive with steals, running and finishing as well. There is a reason the Rockets resigned him, because when the Rockets are playing they way they want, they need someone like Brewer.
Would the Rockets have to trade a positive asset with Brewer? At what point? Right now? Maybe, but it wouldn't be much if so. He is easier to move than Morris. Next year? You could move him fairly easily, as he will have 2/16 left on his deal, and under the new cap that is basically 4-5 million a year. Also, Brewer is more important to the Rockets than most teams because of his value in transition. He is a far better player both defensively and offensively in transition. At this point, it would be a mistake to move Brewer, because in order for the Rockets to reach their upside, they need players like Brewer and Lawson. I am not interested in winning 45 games and losing in round 1. I would personally rather take the chance that the Rockets gel and have a punchers shot to take out the Spurs/Warriors. For the Rockets to do that, they must push the ball and get out in transition with Harden, Brewer/Lawson etc. to have any chance of doing anything.
Fair enough. I just think sometimes people know more about what is likely or unlikely to happen than they give themselves credit for. That's sort of a complement I guess. People claiming to know really know very little more than you, but they are just guessing to give themselves rep later on if they get it right. I'm pretty sure that somewhere in the world, every-time someone asks Jopat for insider advice, a baby unicorn dies.
Ariza has a much greater market than Brewer right now. Don't be surprised if we trade Ariza and keep Brewer at this point.
When Brewer is on he's very, very good for us. When Brewer isn't on, he totally sucks. He's that kind of polarizing player. No middle ground. He's either really good or very, very bad. (Same thing with Smoove.)
