Yep, that was the throw-away line I referenced. Even if we believe anything in the prequels is actually real at this point... not once do they show Luke contacting a force ghost in the original trilogy (as Yoda portends he's learned how to do)... and its a fair bet that Yoda never taught Luke how to do it (seeing how he's always surprised when Obi-wan visits him). Rey having those visions when she simply touched the lightsaber (with the dubbed obi-wan voice saying "Rey!") lends more weight to there being some sort of meta-physical/ghost element that they're waiting to expand on. All those ghosts hanging out in another dimension at the end of ROTJ... something could be explored there.
Agreed, I believe Luke will have found the secret to becoming a force ghost as he has been studying all of the ancient Jedi teachings. Not sure how you could incorporate Yoda and Obi-Wan the Episode VIII as force ghosts but something like that would be cool. While Luke is powerful and probably similar to Obi-Wan in terms of understanding of the force, etc. he only had so much time for guidance from Obi-Wan and Yoda that there are things he would have to learn on his own OR with the help of their force ghosts. I hope the next one goes into deep explanation about certain things. We learn a ton about the plot of the OT from Obi-Wan just speaking about the history of the Empire and the Jedi so I think Luke will play the same role. The lightsaber visions were a decent touch but we haven't really seen visions or flashbacks shown on the screen in any Star Wars before so it will be interesting to see how the next writer/directors ties the events between Episode VI and VII together considering JJ Abrams was of no use for this.
Yeah, but it looks like Luke not only had sex but had a baby. Obi-Wan would have never done that. Luke's always trying to be different, like his petulant little brat father. (Except, I'm not supposed to know Vader was a brat as a kid/adolescent, since that's prequelist knowledge.)
So after a week of binge watching all of the episodes (never seen it before), I went to the theater and watched it. Spoiler I did feel it to be really similar to A New Hope, but I thought the character development was written well. Ren was cool (he shouldve taken off his mask ONLY when he was confronting his father), but Rey was terrific, and she carried the movie well. Finn also did a good job. Overall, 7/10 is a solid rating for this movie. Instead of destroying a larger version of a death star, they couldve totally come up with a story line.
Spoiler We actually don't know if Obi-Wan wouldn't have fathered a child. Two reasons that could point to otherwise: In the Clone Wars animated series, he definitely has a love interest for ~1 year in exposition. Additionally, we just don't know too much about Obi Wan after the Jedi purge to A New Hope...perhaps he considered himself no longer a Jedi, etc. He certainly had a rebellious streak like his teacher. He may have basically considered himself no longer part of the Jedi order because there wasn't one...so its monk like teachings might have gone out the window.
How can you become more powerful yet do absolutely nothing but appear as a ghost and tell others to do stuff you can't do? Oooh, look at me, I'm an immortal ghost. I'm so powerful!
But, since Nick says "we don't accept prequel-ing," why should we accept anything from an animated series?

Though the old EU is still being unofficially used on a basis that they can adapt stuff from here is what is still officially canon in it's time-lined form (via The Force Awakens novelization): - The Phantom Menace - Attack of the Clones - The Clone Wars (Tv Series) - Dark Disciple - Revenge of the Sith - Lords of the Sith - Tarken - A New Dawn - Rebels (Tv Series) - A New Hope - Heir to the Jedi - Battlefront: Twilight Company - The Empire Strikes Back - Return of the Jedi - Aftermath - Aftermath - Life Debt - Aftermath - Empire's End - New Republic - Bloodline - The Perfect Weapon (EBook Original) - The Force Awakens Also it seemingly appears now we won't know Rey's parental lineage until episode IX. I am still not getting it. What makes something canon if it was written, produced, after the originals? Is there like a committee of Star Wars geeks meeting at conventions voting on this? And how do the people get elected to make that decision? Or are you saying the new writers (despite the fact there seems to be many, and maybe some unknown still) are dictating canon by announcing what Post-New Hope/ESB material they will base any new movies on.
Disney made the call. They basically scrapped everything from before they bought the franchise aside from the 6 movies, and the Clones Wars animated series. They didn't pick and choose, it was a complete erasure. That way Disney wasn't tied down by any of the novels, plus they could now release their own expanded universe material as they see fit. The stuff that was removed from Canon may still serve as source material though.
The people with the money dictate what is canon and what is not. Lucas used to be that person, now it's Disney. They even threw out Lucas's ideas for ep. VII on...
Thx for replying, but they are both unsatisfying answers. You make it sound like canon is merely what Disney has the rights to, and they will avoid copyright infringements and plagiarism suits wrt any material that they don't own. What I was asking is has anyone outside of fans ... have the writers ... talked in terms of removing from "canon" past movie concepts and talked about what is allowed and not allowed in the next movies? Or is "canon" largely coming from fan theories. Does Disney even use the word "canon" wrt why they bought rights to some things and not others? And further, sealclubber1016 says, despite "canon" they still might use any source material. So, the writers might be using anything to create new stories, as long as they don't plagiarize something that Disney doesn't own the rights to??
