When your other options are the likes of Mallet and Weeden, not much you can do. The team just needs to have a better off season
There is no reason Hoyer should be on the team. We save 5 million on the cap by releasing him while incurring no dead money. He shouldn't be the starter going into next season, so if he's vying for a back up job, just use Savage or any other street FA. Use that 5 million in money on upgrading anything else.
Exactly. The Texans picked up 2 street free agents in season that were better than Hoyer....no reason whatsoever to have him around. You could have all of the names of the starting and backup QB's on every team in the NFL and even throw in 20 or so of the most recent QB's to end up out of the league for whatever reason. Picking that random name out of a hat would almost certainly be the better option.
Hearing OB really likes Weeden and wants to keep him on the team. Spoiler Ok was Seth Payne on 610 starting a grass roots campaign to keep Weeden!
Well sure, but it doesn't really matter who the GM is, Bob McNair isn't going to let Brian Hoyer stay with the team. Now maybe if Hoyer had only the 10th worst QB performance in NFL playoffs history it would be different, but he wasn't that good.
I didn't know they save that much. My question is this....... Say we cut Hoyer (obviously Weeden / Yates gone) Savage, Draft Pick & Veteran we pick up? Do you think BoB will go in the season with Savage and a rookie as the backup?
If BOB got rid of Fitz he'll definitely get rid of Hoyer after that stink job in the playoffs. He wont be back.
Is everyone forgetting BOB benched Hoyer 3 quarters into his first game?... Where is this nonsense that BOB has a hard-on to bring him back, as if he's oblivious and?or stupid? Playing Brian Hoyer because the alternative is Brandon Weeden is not, under any rational circumstances, an endorsement of Hoyer. It's admitting your QB situation is a toxic spill. If he's back, it's because he's the best available back-up; but any notion that he'll be in the mix to start... I mean, based on what? BOB looked like he was ready to cut him Saturday.
Oh trust me, no one is forgetting that he made the right choice (albeit too late) in the first game of the season against the Chiefs which led to the backup making the game respectable yet he failed to make that correct choice in the playoffs.
The thing about Hoyer is that he wasn't even a game manager. He did well against bad defenses (Colts, Jags, Titans, Falcons, Saints) and terribad against good defenses (Chiefs, Bengals, Patriots). A game manager, at least in my opinion, isn't a guy who posts QBRs of 100+ one week and 50 the next. It's a dude who cruises along in the 80-90 range without many peaks or valleys. Next years QBs: Yates, Savage, #1 pick or P. Manning
Oh for sure, if we actually had a game manager instead of the total and complete garbage that was Hoyer, the Texans might still be playing.....hell given their schedule they might have gotten a bye.
Backup Quarterback Syndrome is a real thing. The less people see of a guy, the more esteem they have for him. Ryan Mallett is the perfect example. People wanted Hoyer benched because they'd seen tons from Hoyer and never seen Mallett play, and that + glimpses of a big arm started people dreaming. Once everybody saw him crap his pants three weeks in a row, and then throw a tantrum, the tune changed. But he was still the same guy that he was three weeks previously. Hoyer is mediocre. Wheeden is across the board worse for his career. He's had trouble picking up offenses since he stopped running the spread after leaving Ok State. If you think Hoyer is a choker, ask Dallas or Cleveland fans about Wheeden. Maybe Savage has something... but the whole point of this post is to indicate people tend to project best case into blank spaces so the truth is he is probably as bad or worse than Hoyer and Weeden. He's almost definitely not as good as people think/wish. At the very least, if you don't acknowledge that you are operating on the bare minimum of knowledge and the chance for mistakes that that brings, then you are lying to yourself. Remember how thrilled some people were last offseason to get rid of Fitzpatrick and replace him with Hoyer? The truth is it was at best a lateral move. Hell, I remember the Cody Carlson hype back in the day when everybody was running Warren Moon out the door. That worked out real well, amirite? There are reasons to not keep Hoyer around as backup, but don't make the mistake of assuming that whatever chump they pick up off the street that you've never seen play is going to be better.
Are you under the impression there's a soul that haunts this forum, actively or passively, who doesn't already know your opinion of Hoyer? I'm sincerely asking because you seem literally incapable of letting any post that mentions Hoyer go without hammering something no one here really, truly disagrees with.
