Yeah this is the song that got me into Bowie. I was an still am a huge NIN fan. Around this time they did some shows together. Would have been a dream seeing them perform together.

Also, you may realize but I wasn't sure from your post. That is in fact Reznor in the video with him.

Bowie showed incredible braveness to tour with NIN at their 90's height and only use songs from "Outside" and the more compatible, but non-hit, songs from his catalogue. He played stuff like "Teenage Wildlife" from "Scary Monsters" and a cover of Scott Walker's "Night Flights." I saw them in Austin in 1995 and it was compelling.

i went to that show in austin. me and a friend saw 3 cute girls from high school there and they asked if we wanted to stay with them in austin that night in their hotel. so we left our other friend and his girlfriend.

well when we were on our way to the hotel we were just about to take the exit and got into a several car pileup totaled the car and had to call one of the girls parents to pick us up.

Ive said a couple times Ashes to Ashes video is an unofficial intro of the 80's. Elements like increased production value in music vids, the "new romantic"/ new wave look, random artsy/creative imagery, special effects, flourescent/off-colors, post-punk sounds, synthesizer riffs, etc. All aesthetics we associate with "the 80's" (though Bowie wasnt intentionally doing that)

Thats a thing with Bowie, he had specific meanings behind his works and still managed to be unique and mysterious whether musical or visual.

I also got into Bowie on this album, but primarily because Bowie experimented with the drum & bass genre. Actually that's the same time NIN did the same with Perfect Drug (and I think Reznor released a D&B album on his label).

It seems like Bowie really did try to hold on to see the release of his last album and video before passing. RIP.

Two brilliant performances. Like Frank Zappa, Bowie was so much better live, and they both attracted the best to play with them. Great finds, basso.

This is the link to a BBC Radio live performance from 2000 (I think). Wouldn't embed for some reason. Superb HD audio, decent video, and tremendous versions of every one of these songs. Bowie is in top form:

    - Wild Is The Wind
    - Ashes To Ashes
    - This Is Not America
    - Absolute Beginners
    - Little Wonder
    - Man Who Sold The World
    - Fame
    - Stay
    - Hallo Spaceboy
    - Cracked Actor
    - I'm Afraid Of Americans

    thanks for posting this.

a current obsession, Glen Hansard (i may be late to the party) offers a an intimate, poignant, bowie cover, bringing out the vulnerability in the song in a way the original doesn't:

btw, GH new album, Didn't Ramble is excellent, even better on vinyl.

What a way to go out. Working on an album, along with videos, while battling cancer to be released shortly before his death.

Remember hearing "changes" as a nine yr old and I was hooked. Then "ziggy stardust", "suffragette city" & "rebel rebel" came out soon there after and I was l like

My older sister took me to see him in concert around '74 I believe, and it was very evident that this dude was WAY ahead of his time. Saw him at Madison Square Garden yrs later when I lived in Manhattan, and just thinking about him, his music, and those shows brings a HUGE smile.

    Thanks you Mr Bowie. RIP.
