As convincing as the argument sounds that having the last pick right before the Astros sabotaged our class , I doubt that made a huge difference . The cardinals wouldn't pick a player just to sabotage the Astros , in fact the cardinals wouldn't pick a player in front of us because they know we will take him . There are 28 other teams that picked after the Astros and they all could pick said player .

Plus both teams are playing with different amounts of pool money . So the Astros targets may not have been able to be selected by the cards . I understand how it could seem that the cards would pick a player to prevent the Astros from getting him , but they would be hurting their own draft class . Now obviously the extra data from the Astros should help them analyze and pick players and maybe the fact that the Astros picked around the same spot meant that both teams were targeting similar players at certain spots ... But it just prolly helped the cards make the best choice at their given spot .

If it didn'the give Cardinals a big advantage, he wouldn't have done it.

I'm not saying that it didn't give them a big advantage , double information is a great thing . But the idea that because they picked 30th and we picked first was a reason why the hack was advantageous is a misconception I think .

Considering they were picking before Astros and knew how much would offer a guy is a big deal. If Astros were able to get a feel that a guy would sign for X, Cards knew they could sign player for X one pick before. Hugely beneficial if any of the guys Astros planned to sign underslot got selected a pick before.

Yea I agree. Obviously the Cards didn't just take players that we wanted throughout the draft

But if it happened just once or twice, and those players end up being good mlb players, the significance it great

Outside of the first few rounds, there is a huge disparity in how teams view some players. Due to just the sheer number of potential draftees, players who are not scouted by some teams fall through the cracks all the time. Think of it this way, the Cards basically doubled their amateur scouting and analysis staff for free.

How should the league proceed...the feds estimated the value to be approx $1.5 million. But for a high level employee, he jail time...but the Cards deserve multi year losses in draft picks. Want to really punish this team...wipe out their draft position for 2016 entirely (basically bump everyone up). Then when the Cards most likely get a high draft choice spot the following year, make them pay the Astros...The Cardinals then should owe the Astros their top 3 picks of 2017 plus a $5 million penalty.

Just curious...why do you think the Cards will have a high draft position next year? They're still pretty good...

    This.

    Draft position AND finances matter.

The Cards also were able to utilize scouting from someone they knew was a good talent evaluator.

How is everyone certain they only look at the Astros?

I think they should take their logo away for 3 years and make them wear A picture of Charlie Kerfeld splattered on their chest.

IDK, it is so hard to know what it propretary to the person or the company.

The league will need to come down very hard on the Cardinals, but I wouldn't expect much compensation for the Astros, particularly in the form of draft picks. While the Astros were wronged, 28 teams would likely complain about the Astros getting significant additional picks.

Listening to MLB Radio, two radio hosts said Cardinals should be punished severely.

Their suggested punishment... strip STL of ONE 1st round pick and a million dollar fine.

I assume the Astros would get a handwritten apology.. with a cherry on top
    ____

The biasedness/blindness of fans can be so laughable.

A Cardinal fan called the same show and basically said it's MLB's fault for not requiring former employees to change their passwords.

It's refreshing when people can be fair when arguing/talking/debating.. not just sports, but many situations in life.

They know Luhnow is good, and being their former employee, thought they could obtain easy access to his info.

Correct me if I'm wrong here: Correa initially got a prior version of Luhnow's password when Luhnow turned in his laptop and information upon his departure from the Cardinals.

Is that seriously the Cardinals' HR policy for departing employees? That's... not good.

Chris Perry of The Crawfish Boxes compared the Astros and Cardinals 2014 draft class side-by-side in an attempt to figure out whether the Cardinals got an advantage from viewing the Astros' evaluations of players, in addition to their own evaluations.

It's strictly a thought exercise filled with what-if scenarios, which works, because there's still a bunch of unknown variables in this story.

Mozeliak "was unaware" of the scope of Chris Correa's actions.

Yeah...I'm gonna have to call bulls**t. This wasn't a lone wolf. I'm not sure how difficult it will be to prove but I hope once they do, those get indicted for perjury.

    Agreed.

It's like "well how much is 'unaware'?". If you had any insight he was illegally accessing another team's system he should have been fired straight away. If you actually saw any of the material yourself you should be fired for not doing anything about it and the team penalized harshly.

Doubt the charges go up the chain. I expect Cardinals researched themselves hard core to try to get rid of those involved to try to limit MLB's punishment. Doubt Feds would stop unless they reached the top.

I could see lower level guys being in on it.
