I love threads about hip hop, one of my favorite topics of debate. To say "Rap is Crap" is too simplistic. If you're under the impression that the majority of fans listen to Future, Thugga, Sosa or the overrated Travis Scott, you're mistaken. If I'm just listening for fun or at the gym (pre-lymphoma), I might have that junk on Spotify. Other than that, I appreciate the rappers who still write and have lyrics. I'd even argue that the new generation who believes Kendrick and J Cole are lyrically-elite missed out on some "below the radar" guys like Nas, AZ, and shoot, even Houston's own Bun-B. But best rapper ALIVE? With the different genres in rap music, I think it's hard, but my short list: Nas, of course, but I don't understand how everyone constantly forgets about the entire Slaughterhouse group, collectively and individually. -Royce, by himself, or PRhyme (with DJ Premier--one of the BEST producers of all time. Why do you think BET always puts him on the cypher?) -Joe Budden: "All Love Lost" IMO was the most underrated album this year. Lyrically speaking, outside of Nas and Em, Joe is the deepest on the mic. I think Kendrick and J Cole are great. However, in terms of substance, I don't know if Kendrick always hits the mark. I think some of his work is built on hype. "To Pimp a Butterfly," in my mind isn't deserving of those 11 grammy nods. J Cole had a better album without any features. Either way, Joe's wordplay, honesty and ability to pour his soul out on every track goes unnoticed. From his "Mood Muzik" series to "Halfway House," to "Some Love Lost" and even "No Love Lost," his lyrics are impeccable. Budden's response to Kendrick on "Out of Control" was better than anyone's, with Joell Ortiz right behind. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nYntSMIzimI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Destroyed Kendrick on his own song: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oux9QlPAeh4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> One of my top favs: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wXpkqQZfkHw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> -Joell Ortiz--his last release, "Human," was another lyrical gem. He's another rapper that will never get his dues. He doesn't get to the same level of honesty in his life as Joe, but his story-telling, adlibs, etc... are one of a kind. Crooked I or now, KXING Crooked, is one of the west coast's best. Again, I don't put him in the same genre as Joe, or even Joell, but his catalog is incredible. In terms of battle rapping, he could probably destroy anyone, including Kendrick, J.Cole, etc... Eminem is still right there as one of the best, and as long as Nas is alive, K dot and J Cole aren't taking the crown. ...and Free GUCCI!!!

Yeah I don't know what song you were listening to but you might want to listen to a full mixtape or album before posting. I'll just chalk that down to "what being what". I loved all his mixtapes except the last one. I don't really feel he's gone mainstream or commercial yet a la J-Cole especially with the last two albums-Cadillactica and Live From the Underground. I feel if he really wanted to, he could go more mainstream with his songs but he is fighting that. Now hopefully the last mix tape isn't a sign of things to come.
Ha someone is a huge fan of those 4(Royce, Budden, Crooked and Joell). I agree with you though, those four collectively and individually are up there and yet are all still highly underrated.
No one in your poll. Drake is straight-up bunk. Only 12-year old punks would consider him to be a legitimate artist.
