What 'prequels' are you talking about? There were no prequels.

Man, I love that I'm left wondering about so much from this movie. Great stuff to kick around with my sons when we're not talking about Houston sports.

Oh my. Never even thought about that. Would be AMAZING if true.

I remember reading somewhere a long time ago (in a galaxy far far away...) that after Palpatine dies, his spirit lives on and eventually takes over the body of some other kid.

EDIT: Seriously, I can't stop looking at this pic. The headwound is in the exact same place. "I will finish what you started.." Holy ****.

Something tells me that neither Abrams nor anyone at Disney has any particular interest in 'tying' the new movies to the 'prequels' in any way at all. Mayyyybe Snoke is someone briefly mentioned in one of the previous movies, but let me put it this way: even as big of a Star Wars fan as *I* am, I had to finally go to Wikipedia to look up 'who is Plagueis?' Oh, he was someone who was TALKED about for a few seconds during one of the ten thousand scenes in the 'prequels' in which someone is either walking and talking, or, more excitingly, sitting and talking.. how did I not remember THAT guy?.. If Snoke turns out to be that guy, it's not going to be some big reveal like Vader saying 'No, I am your father.' .. it'll be more like 'Who?'

Hopefully this is someone entirely new.

I agree that it isn't important to incorporate an obscure character. No emotional attachment there. But the interesting aspect of Plagueis was his ability to cheat death, which might be fun to explore, but not necessary.

It just depends how into the Star Wars EU you are. Most of the official canon stuff deals with the time period that consists of the Skywalker family. It makes sense, Vader is an iconic villain, Sidious is the most powerful sith ever, & Luke is the most powerful jedi ever (could be debatable). Anything after canon could be considered obscure by the general public.

However, if you read some of the books in the EU, Plagueis isn't obscure at all. They even dedicated a book to him lol.

So whether something is obscure or not is based on that person's perspective.

I couldn't care less about tying in the prequels, it'd be cool but that's not why I'm hoping Snoke is Plagueis. I'm hoping Snoke is Plageuis because he's an exceptional sith lord. (to those saying Palpatine killed him... Yes we know that. People don't stay dead in Star Wars.)

All that being said, it certainly is not necessary, the movie's don't need Plageuis to be great. I definitely recommend using something from the EU, it's too good to go to waste, especially with some of the magnificent villains that they've had.

The new movie reminded me a bit of the Thrawn Trilogy -- with the same crew pulling off impossible missions in Stars Wars like fashion
(let's just walk in this side door and plant bombs everywhere).

On that note I wish in this altered universe Thrawn would make an appearance.

Theory b has some credence to it and would definitely make it more interesting.

While theory a could be correct as well, it's ignoring some of the key points brought up by "b" and is much more loose speculation - not that they both aren't to an extent.

Interesting thoughts and personally, I would prefer "a" because I'm hoping much of what is implied and seems to be straight forward is more of a misdirection.
