It measures likelyhood of induction not how deserving a player is. Vlad got extra points for being in the OF, for making more all-star games, by having a BA over .315 (Bags average falling below .300 cost him any bonus). There is no value given for walks, defense (outside of gold gloves), or base-running (not even SBs). It is a statistical measure of how people picked HOFers before advanced statistics came around.
Anyone see Griffey on espn? He's a fata$$ now. More writers will drop off next year who didn't vote for Bagwell. Lock he gets in.
Didn't Piazza play 1st base later in career. Correct. But my reference was to player ability. Bagwell was a better all around player. New York media certainly helps. Not to jump in to politics but if the media wouldn't put Trump on the news every three minutes he wouldn't be the unfortunate front runner.
I think Vlad will do a lot better than you think. He has no steroid accusations out there, and he has all the traditional things people look for: .318 BA, 2500+ hits, 400+ HR, 9 AS games, MVP. To me, he isn't a first-ballot guy, but I'd vote for him no question. I think there is a chance he goes in next year, though I think it is more likely he goes in 2018. I think he'll be an interesting case, as his traditional stats say he is a slam-dunk HOFer, but his advanced stats say he is very borderline.
Did he win a MVP? No memory of that... The BBWAA is lazy; they don't like to do work. My sense with Vlad is that he, like Bagwell, requires a little work. He's not going to have the magic milestones (though, agree - .300 will resonate) - you're going to have to dig to see his true value. Regardless, Bagwell is a lock, no matter who comes on the ballot.
Everyone getting mad at voters need to instead get mad at the system. The system says you only only vote for 10 players every year. Griffey was a near lock this year. So if there are other players you believe are deserving or from your media market who may be overlooked nationally, you may give your votes to them instead.
I think it is more likely that there was a combination of blank vote & nobody should go unanimous. The fact that there were only 3 guys, gives me hope that one day we will see someone unanimous (Mike Trout?).
Looking at how much of the coverage is focused towards Griffey makes me happy Bags came up short. We already had to deal with Biggio taking a back seat.
Baggy should have been a FIRST ballot inductee. That said he's getting in next yr. No way VLad, Manny, or Pudge are getting in on the 1st ballot. Next yr: Baggy, Hoffman & Raines.
Great number for Bagwell, save actually getting in. Really looking forward to next year. Don't forget to mention his cannon arm. Maybe the site mis-remembered Good point
Just mentioned on MLB network. Sixteen of the seventeen players who reached the 70% milestone (but came up short) were elected the very next yr.
The alternative view... if it's Bags, Raines, and maybe Hoffman... could it be viewed as the "worst Hall class" by the general public? Given how long it has taken Raines, the general misconceptions on Bags, and the long arguments that will come from putting Hoffman in? I hope not, but that's the flipside to taking a back seat to the Griffeys and Randys that are no-brainers to the world
That's all fine and well And I'm not actually "mad" cause its not something that anyone has any control over except a bunch of non athletic writers anyway But if you get a vote, and somehow don't see Jr as being a HOF player You shouldn't get to vote anymore, cause you have proved your votes aren't legitimate as far as choosing worthy candidates That's all I'm saying. Quit with all the BS and vote on who is worthy That's too much for some though
Nobody thinks about the "class" a HOF'er was in. Like Smoltz has been saying all night on MLB, "nobody asks a HOf'er what class were you in"?
