I watched this last week. I didn't catch the hype around it, so I had low expectations. I really enjoyed the movie. I did find Blunts character highly obnoxious and how one would expect to advance so far being that naive. I understand her character perspective is what was intended to drive the movie, but if you her as a supporting character, it makes for a good thriller.

It was Macers (Blunt) perception on how events should be handled and the rules of engagement; ie: FBI shouldn't be in Mexico and the CIA shouldn't be in the US.

right, the FBI was there just to legalize the CIA operation. they didn't even have to join the fun, and the reason why the CIA picked a green agent.

Kinda surprised I never posted in this thread. Saw it way back in September, really enjoyed it. I didn't know what to expect going into it, but I left impressed overall with the kind of movie it was.

Acting was solid, story line was solid. Probably one of my favorite movies of the entire year.

I assumed he raped him considering that there was no water going down the drain and the guy was already gagging. I think he brought in the water to make it look like he would be waterboarding him.

But, but he talked, he told them where the tunnel was. If he was raped, he would be chocking and not be able to talk... :p

Now I have been reading everywhere online about this out of curiosity. Lots of debating with no clear answer. People are saying he raped, waterboarded, pissed on him, or beat him up and used the water to wash the blood down the drain. If water was going down the drain when it was shown, then i would have assumed waterboarding but me and my gf both assumed rape of some sort before even saying anything. I thought he was going to waterboard him though tbh. Also, apparently Benecio made a joke about penetrating during some Q&A for the movie. I haven't seen that yet though. Maybe the director wanted you to imagine on your own how far he would go.

Kudos to people still using the Spoiler tag. Have this movie next up on my Netflix list.

I buy that and it makes the scene darker. Didn't notice that detail.

this is a unique movie. the good guys were always one step ahead of the game, they clearly showed their plan yet it was still thrilling.

Another detail was the fact that when the scene ends it shows a still shot of an unopened water jug right next to the drain and then sounds of repetitive sodomizing sounds happen.

Remember, rape would require Benicio's character to get a hard on. I don't know about you, but I couldn't get a hard on in that situation. Benicio isn't some convict locked up with no access to women for years, so could get a hard-on by a bologna sandwich. Plus, I just wouldn't stick my dick in an enemy's mouth, ever. Might lose it, like Shawshank.

I can't think of any movies where a gang member, spy or a cop raped someone they were interrogating.

That said, I did think it odd that focused on the drain with nothing going into it.

This movie was on point. Outstanding score, acting and cinematography. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the movie. The filmmakers did an great job capturing the malevolent feel of that atmosphere x10. After living in Northern Mexico for the past few years this brought out the goosebumps. 9/10
